Super hard and most of these companies will say they will help you but they just direct you to USA jobs or indeed. There are tons of MOS positions in the military that can only get that one job that you’ve been doing for the last 10 to 15 years.
One of the keys to a successful transition is “meaningful employment” and Hire Heroes USA certainly knows the formula to achieve it! Congratulations on this significant milestone Ross!

#transitioningmilitary YOU. NEED. THIS. This is a great, quick resource, and I’d like to share my story…
After watching Michael Quinn’s talks for a few months, along with several other resources (#Vets2industry networking events, articles like this one below, LOTS of conversations with mentors and recent retirees, and many more), I was feeling a little overwhelmed. My notebook was full with thousands of things to do, where do I start? I took the shot in the dark approach and picked #networking…and it worked! But I didn’t just network. I built on all the networking techniques I learned over my career plus a few experimental techniques and although I feel like I am bragging, I had the smoothest transition out of the Military that I had heard of.
I submitted my retirement request on Oct 2nd (the 1st was on a Sunday 😡), started executing my exit plan that day, had a phone screening the following Friday, face to face interview a week later, was sitting knee to knee with a CEO, president, and executive VPs by Halloween, and had an offer letter at 5:02 pm the next Friday (Jeri Tackett, SPHR, SHRM-SCP almost had me waiting through the weekend! 😁)
How did I do it? I networked, I was relentless in my pursuit of future opportunities, and I 100% found the best boss (Cassidy Marchiano!!!) I could have hoped for, but she wasn’t my boss yet. She agreed to mentor me from the civilian perspective and just so happened to have a position that I seemed like a good fit for (where do you think I found her profile?).
But… I didn’t just click the connect button and pray, I was intentional with my message that went along with the request to connect. I didn’t copy/paste, I wrote each of the messages to civilian recruiters one by one and I removed “I” where I could and placed “you” where I should. I was genuine in a compliment based on their profile and I ended with a call to action. (I listened a little to the advice given). Yes, all with 100 character limit on an introductory message. I connected with a lot of great people, and I am sure there are a few hundred pending connections still sitting out there.
From the first Friday in November until the 1st of the next October, the biggest stressor of the retirement process was absent. I utilized the programs available to my benefit, I flipped the Selfless Service switch at the right time, and knew I would be ok!
Shadow time was afforded to me (Christopher Remillard, thanks for your support), I took advantage of the amazing #careerskillsprogram#csp through an individual internship, learned who I’d be working for and what they do, and absolutely love the job I found when I retired and grew up.
#servicemembers, these programs are there for you, and advice like this article is #FREE!. Take advantage of all you can and listen to those that have walked the same path before you. Be humble, it’s a different world outside the wire. Avoid the common mistakes and sculpt your image to be the work of art it deserves to be.
