I was asked yesterday " What advice would you give service leavers transitioning " 👇 . There are so many good references out there so here are a few : 1. Engage as early in transition as you can and take everything you can get. 2. Try and understand what motivates you and enthuses you ( Its Your future ). 3. If its just about the money be careful , we military need more than that. 3. If your reskilling , do your homework and do not follow the pack. 4. Don't be afraid of going in low and working your way up. 5. Remember , your only worth what your worth ( So prove it ). Finally : Train - Educate - Promote - Repeat #military

I had a wonderful conversation with my nursing colleagues in the OR today both of whom spent time in the military. We discussed how the military heirarchy often made communication easier and more direct than what they’ve experienced in their civilian work life. CIF (Central Issue Facility) - Every Soldier knows this place. Some have nightmares of this place. For the civilians who are not familiar, it is the location where Soldiers are issued their gear, uniforms, rucks, first aid kits, sleeping bags, ponchos, and let's not forget my favorite, the woobie (poncho liner). Essentially anything that does not go bang, boom, or stabby stab, comes from CIF. When Soldiers enter the Army, this is one of the first places they visit at Basic Combat Training and walk away with more kit than they can carry in two trips. Depending on the unit of assignment, some Soldiers are issued even more gear from their local CIF. Throughout a Soldier's enlistment, they are expected to maintain 100% accountability of their equipment. Something along the lines of, "I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself" comes to mind. If they lose something, generally they have to pay for it. So, when it comes to the end of a 29 year career in the Army, going to CIF for me came with a little bit of anxiety. Do I have everything that was issued to me over the years, after 15 moves, multiple deployments, overseas assignments in both Asia and Europe? I can say, I am a GO at this station! I cleared CIF this morning missing nothing! I even walked away with stuff they did not want, two duffle bags full! One step closer to retirement. Exciting news! Our team is launching a new project aimed at providing help and support to Veterans, Soldiers, and First Responders suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS). This project is a vision that came to life after witnessing the devastating effects of PTS on people's lives during a trip to Canada. Our goal is simple: to train 1 or 2 people in EVERY Legion across the UK. By completing Workshop Level 1 training, these Carers will be equipped with the skills to help ALL the guys in that Legion suffering from PTS. The techniques taught in this training are safe, simple, and non-invasive. Once they become proficient, we will offer further guidance and help remotely and eventually by our team of specially trained PTS Therapists across the UK. Our project in the UK is just the beginning. We are also partnering with a project in Canada to work with Veterans and First Responders with the same goals and aims. Our ultimate vision is to provide local help and support to Veterans, Soldiers, and First Responders everywhere. Militaries routinely retire experienced personnel due to a formula based around their age and rank. Why? Yes I get the renewal argument but if we are short on warriors, encourage some of them to stay. Relax the formula. Add a couple of years or more. For those who want to continue to serve. And if the problem is the budget, well why not institute an AUKUS option eg a 3-5 year option for USN RN etc to serve and upskill in the Royal Australian Navy. Simplify some inter service mobility. Instant experienced crew upskilling the newbies. Are we really thinking aggressively outside the box? Could we not build a bigger, more flexible box?

I recently retired from the military, the last year of which I served as the Program Director for a unit specific transition program. I observed statements such as: - Don’t take SBP (survivor benefit plan) it’s a rip off and here is why…..or…..If you don’t take SBP you are leaving your spouse destitute if you pass away. -Don’t sell leave, they tax it at the maximum rate and it’s not worth it. Instead we should be saying: -This is SBP (give a solid explanation of it) these are the pros and cons, explain you can take reduced amount instead of all or nothing and then offer secnarios. -If you are in a transition program, retiring at a given date here are some ideas about why taking terminal leave, or cashing in leave, or maybe doing both makes more sense. We should be educationing our transitioning veterans so THEY can make an informed, intelligent decision for THEIR life situation.
