According to the H1 2023 State of KYC in Africa report by Smile ID (formerly Smile Identity), the average downtime of national ID databases across Africa dropped from 6% in 2022 to 3% in H1 2023. Further analysis shows that the maximum downtime within 24 hours also declined from 63% in 2022 to 18% in H1 2023, and days with 10%+ downtime dropped from 37 (2022) to 19 (H1 2023). Despite this improvement in national ID database uptime, interruptions are still detrimental to the onboarding of customers. This leaves Document Verification, which involves collecting and verifying user-submitted ID documents, as the more reliable method for conducting KYC checks. The number of foreign document verification cases in all parts of the world has grown by an average of 21% since the summer of 2021. To live the life of a digital nomad, professionals must routinely subject themselves to complex processes to safely identify themselves everywhere they go. The result is that digital nomads come across systems for identity verification more often than most people do. Identity verification (IDV) of digital nomads can be a tricky task for many businesses as their established processes are not designed for such a large variety of foreign IDs, and thus require revamping.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) is set to launch National ID cards with payment functionality for Nigerians who have registered for the National Identification Number (NIN). These cards, powered by NIBSS’ AfriGO, will serve as a multifunctional tool, incorporating social and financial services. Key features of the card include compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, machine-readable zones, identity card issue dates, Nigeria’s quick response code (NQR), biometric authentication, offline capabilities, and functionality as both a debit and prepaid card. Only registered citizens and legal residents with NINs will be eligible to request these cards, which will serve as the country’s default national identity card and can be used as debit or prepaid cards linked to bank accounts. Requests for cards will be available online, at commercial banks, various agencies, or NIMC offices nationwide, enhancing accessibility for all eligible citizens and legal residents. This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing identity verification and financial inclusion in Nigeria, promising to empower individuals and drive socioeconomic development across the nation. Nigerian based identity company SEAMFIX raises $4.5 million for his identity management platform #Seamfix, a leading identity solutions provider based in Nigeria, is set to expand its footprint across Africa after securing a $4.5 million funding round, spearheaded by Alitheia IDF. This marks the company's first influx of institutional capital since its founding 17 years ago. Established by Chimezie Emewulu and Chibuzor Onwurah, two classmates driven to "seamlessly fix" technological issues, Seamfix began by creating custom digital solutions for organizational workflows before pivoting to identity management in 2015. The shift to identity solutions came after realizing the vast identity verification challenges during a project that revealed student impersonation issues. Seamfix’s services have become crucial in a region where over 542 million people lack identity cards, representing a significant impediment to socio-economic development. Their innovative approach includes creating digital identities, providing verification for large organizations and governments, and facilitating transaction accreditation. Partnerships with major African telcos like MTN have been pivotal in registering millions and ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory requirements. The funding will also support the development of a pan-African identity switch, a groundbreaking initiative that will enable cross-border identity verification, potentially transforming the economic landscape by facilitating easier and more secure transactions across Africa. With a track record of processing over 500 million identities and major contributions to national projects, such as helping the National Identity Management Commission [NIMC] and various telcos in Nigeria, Seamfix is set to leverage this investment to further penetrate the African market and address the pressing identity verification needs across the continent. Our ID template database, the most comprehensive, has become a thousand items bigger! Since the beginning of the year, we have added numerous types of identity documents from every corner of the world. Among these are e-passports that are the first of their kind for some countries, including Bahrain, Iraq, Jamaica, and more. Why does this matter? Because electronic documents have proved to be more fraud-resilient. When adding new documents to the database, our experts meticulously describe all their security features. And this is what sets our database apart. With 30 years of experience in forensic hardware devices and analysis, we scrutinize every inch of a document so that organizations can establish a robust and adaptable identity verification workflow with unrivaled precision.
