Awareness for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital- Cancer has effected all of us at one time or another. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for U.S. children past infancy. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has increased children's survivability from 20% 50 years ago to 80% today. In order to help raise funds for many families and children whose lives have been affected by cancer, I will be competing the toughest 50k race in the USA; the Speedgoat Mountain Race in Utah July 19-20th. This is such an important point. The reality is that our lower staff pay is not because we don’t value our people but because we have to keep the lights on so we can meet the needs of those we serve. We don’t hoard money or distribute profits like the private sector, where pay is often sacrificed for profits. When we can’t offer big pay rises it’s because the cost would seriously jeopardise the charity’s chance of surviving - or would mean there would be a critical service that we would have to reduce or close. Those who give us money don’t typically get enthusiastic about funding pay rises. So it’s hard to raise the money to pay people more. But as Samantha says, what we can do is offer flexibility. Our staff at DSC are not paid huge amounts. But they are loyal and happy. It helps that they have a three day weekend every week; we are supportive and flexible about caring and parenting responsibilities; they have their birthday as a day off; they are involved in decision making and told the truth about the challenges we are facing. We give them the opportunity to act in absence for their managers so their leadership skills are developed. We make it clear that their health and wellbeing is a priority for us and we implement the things that they ask for that help them to be physically and mentally healthy as best we can. But more importantly, we treat them like adults who can handle the truth. Pay matters of course. But when you can’t give huge (or indeed sometimes any!) pay rises, you can give folk other ways to feel valued and supported and make them want to stay with you.

Hi, I am a St. Jude Hero! My family (Dr. Claudiana Triskatis) and myself moved to the USA last year. As part of living in this great country it was always my dream to run the New York Marathon and this year I will do it - on the day of my birthday! When researching on the race, I realized that I could make it happen and combine this with a bigger reason by fundraising for the kids and families at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital: 1) Every donation helps find a cure for childhood cancer. Hi again friends and connections and Happy Dry July Eve. Last Tuesday I posted that I was participating in Dry July to raise funds to help people suffering from cancer. I set myself a (apparently too modest) target of $500 (AUD) for the month of July. Well, that target was passed on about 28 June, so I have had to revise my fundraising target – I now think that $1500 is achievable. With almost 2,000 connections between LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, I just need a hit rate of 10% of all of you to donate $5 (you can’t buy a drink for that anywhere), and then I’ll get to the $1,500 with room to spare. If you are donating in Euros, GB Pounds, or US Dollars, I’ll be happy with 3 (euro, GBP, USD). This is also a little bit of an experiment about the social medial algorithms. We know that posts don’t go to all our friends and connections, so improving the reach of this post is really important. A huge thankyou to the people who have already donated and also to those who have commented on and shared posts – you are putting these algorithms to work to help cancer sufferers. One final thing, in preparation for Dry July, I have abstained from alcohol this week, so I have done the hard part – breaking the habit. I’m sleeping better and my clothes are ‘not as firm’.
