When I began my licensing journey many years ago, I had no idea about the complexities and the degree of power unsupervised, appointed individuals had over one’s destiny and livelihood. I hope to help future licensees with this knowledge. After taking a year to research and reflect on what occupational licensing is to society, I realized there is much more that we all need to know and understand. Follow the Cardinal Institute for WV Policy “Who Watches the Watchmen” series to learn more information. #occupationallicensing #barriertoentry #administrativeprocedures #supremecourt
If you’re trying to gain a license to work as a barber, electrician, or another skilled job, then who should sit on the licensing board? Current professionals serving in these fields might seem like the obvious choice. However, that might not always be the case. “Existing practitioners have their own interests in mind as well—not just the interests of the citizens of West Virginia. When licensing board members are involved in deciding how difficult it is for new practitioners to enter, existing practitioners have very clear economic incentives to prevent new competition.” #OccupationalLicensure #WestVirginia #Jobs https://lnkd.in/egrHPKDq

Legal & tax strategy for professionals & nonprofits | M&A deals | Legal structuring | Tax planning | Nonprofit Tax Exemption
Here's my hiring formula: - I connect regularly with quality people that would fit future hiring needs (for my firm, this means tax pros, bookkeepers, corporate paralegals, etc.) - When a need arises, I use LinkedIn Recruiter Lite to run a targeted search - I send personalized messages to qualified candidates - I carve out time to interact with everyone that responds, and send Calendly links to the ones I'm interested in talking with further We're currently searching for a corporate paralegal, and I followed this process over the weekend. Results: - Sent about 50 connection requests on Saturday - Received about 20 responses by Monday morning - Of the 20 responses, 10 were interested I'm expecting about a 50% response rate from this method based on previous history, and about 30% of respondents to be fully qualified for the open position. That means I may send 100 messages, get 50 responses back, and have 15 great candidates to choose from.

Providing 'professional services' doesn't make you better than 'service professionals.' Your intellectual pursuits don't make you smarter than people who work with their hands. My LinkedIn network is chock-full of those who offer professional services. There are JDs, PhDs, MAs, MBAs, EDDs, and LLMs. There are chemical engineers, accountants, lawyers, physicists, medical professionals, and consultants of all kinds. I've noticed that - perhaps by nature of our prestigious degrees - we 'professional service providers' tend to look down on blue-collar 'service professionals'. In simpler terms, lawyers, doctors, accountants, and engineers look down on HVAC technicians, mechanics, equipment operators, carpenters, welders, electricians, firefighters, laborers, and farmers, assume they lack intelligence, and believe those blue-collar jobs are things anyone could do. First, I'll address the issue with hostility. Then I'll try to find us some common ground. When I run into people who make blatant comments about the inferiority of the blue-collar, the working class, the proletariat, service professionals, or whatever you prefer to call them, my knee-jerk reaction is to say "Excuse me, do you even know how to change your f***ing oil?" More often than not, the answer is no. So you know the rule against perpetuities! That's great! So do I. You know what is a hell of a lot more complicated than the RAP? Repairing an AC system, installing a circuit panel, repairing drum brakes, making wheat grow, and building a god***mn house. I get it, you accomplished something prestigious. You fought your way through school. You became an expert in a field. You provide a valuable service. Same here! It's great BUT ... you need to remember that your bill rate isn't a measurement of your value to society. You aren't better than anyone else. More importantly, the fact that you have specialized 'knowledge' doesn't make you more intelligent than others. Some of the most intelligent people I've met - people who can understand complex subjects almost instantaneously - are farmers without advanced degrees and laborers with little-to-no education. Hostilities aside, we are all on the same team. In case you haven't noticed yet, "service professional" and "professional service provider" mean the same thing in plain English. People pay me to draft contracts because (1) they don't know how to do it and (2) it would take them more time than it's worth to do it on their own. People pay HVAC professionals, plumbers, and carpenters to repair and build their homes for the exact same reason. All service professionals - doctors and welders, accountants and mechanics, hair stylists and engineers - are in the same line of business. If you dive deep enough, you'll find there is a similar level of cognitive bandwidth required to be successful in each of those professions. We are not different. Acting like we are doesn't make you sound smart. It makes you sound like an a***ole.
