This week I was delighted to kick off a 3 day leadership program for emerging leaders at Bendigo Kangan Institute. We had an absolute blast and learned so much about ourselves and each other. It got me thinking about the typical way of approaching training for emerging leaders. The tendency is to jump head first into ‘up-skilling’. Which, I mean, fair enough…. There is a LOT to learn and a GAZILLION questions answer. BUT… by jumping straight into the question ‘WHAT DO WE NEED TO LEARN SO WE CAN LEAD?’ we risk reinforcing the feeling of ‘not-enoughness’ that is so prevalent in new leaders. Most new leaders are so focused on their skills GAPS, that they lose sight of their innate GOLD! So in my session, we kicked off with a different question. ‘HOW AM I ALREADY READY TO LEAD?’, setting our emerging leaders up to realize that they are not starting from scratch, by: - Reminding them of all personal & professional experiences they already bring with them - Reconnecting them with their innate character traits that will be useful as leaders - Encouraging them to actively use their natural, energizing strengths that will support them to lead a team By the end of our session, we had a bunch of emerging leaders who felt way more confident, motivated and connected to their authentic selves. “What I learned about transformational leadership from my son and grandson this month.” Here's what Chris Foy, Level 52 Leadership Development & Coaching Partner, shares: I was visiting my grandson (and his parents) last week and really enjoyed the opportunity to watch him grow and learn. He was very focused on running and climbing, which more than occasionally resulted in thrills and spills. As a new grandpa, I was, of course, hovering to make sure that there were no injuries or accidents. My son had some great advice: “It’s okay if he falls - he needs to test his limits and challenge himself”. Watching my grandson, I could clearly see how fun failure was for him and how important it was for his learning. What does this have to do with transformational leadership? At Level 52, we believe that failure is critical to growth and that when experimentation is done with intention, it has the potential to be truly transformational. Here are a couple of questions I invite you to ask yourself: 🔶 What am I doing to encourage my employees to experiment with new approaches and strategies? 🔶 How am I helping my team to see the fun in failure? 🔶 What support do they need to fail safely and learn from it? Just concluded the first module of the PA Consulting Delivery Leadership Programme. A key takeaway that has resonated with me is the influence of authentic human connections in leadership initiation and handovers. In the corporate world, it's often simple to view senior leaders as untouchable figures solely dedicated to their work. However, this module has taught me that every leader is fundamentally human. They have families, passions, and lives beyond the workplace. Recognising and respecting this shared humanity opens doors to more meaningful connections. As Sir Alex Ferguson wisely said, “There’s a reason that God gave us two ears, two eyes, and one mouth. It’s so you can listen and watch twice as much as you talk. Best of all, listening costs you nothing.” It's a reminder that effective leadership often begins with active listening and understanding.
