Now I know. You know? "The difference between copy editing and proofreading lies in which components of a written work each role focuses on. In copy editing, the copy is tidied up for conciseness and polished so that the information is delivered to the reader clearly. Proofreading, however, is the last opportunity to catch errors and correct inconsistencies relating to how the page looks." https://lnkd.in/gzzsQJqW

Editor and business writer for service businesses | Saving overloaded, under-resourced communications people from stress
#editing #proofreading #copyediting #AskAndYeShallReceive Just came across this great page (among all the great pages) in the Australian Government Style Manual, the online 7th edition. It's a helpfully clear explanation of what 'editing' is and what 'proofreading' is. (Spoiler alert: the two functions are different!) 😯 Proofreading is not copyediting. Proofreading doesn't = checking for any errors, omissions or blunders. If your writing has not yet been copyedited, asking for it to be proofread causes confusion. If you'd like someone to check your as-yet-not-copyedited writing for any errors, omissions or blunders, please ask them to 'check it for any errors, omissions or blunders', rather than 'proofread it'. The whole interchange will be much more productive, I promise you, because everyone's expectations will be clearer. (And anticipate that your chosen checker will find some errors, omissions or blunders for you. Because they do happen, even to the best writers.) (And the presence of errors, omissions or blunders is no reflection on the quality of your writing. It just shows that you're a human.)

Hit send with confidence | Proofreader and proof-editor for marketing and comms folk | copywriters | content writers | non-fiction authors
'This hasn't been proofread!' You spot an error or two in something you're reading. 🟨 Does it mean the text wasn't proofread? 🟨 If it WAS proofread, does it mean the proofreader did a poor job? 🟨 What do you mean, no? Surely that's the whole point of proofreading? 🟨 Well, yes, of course. But here are some things to consider. Scenario 1️⃣ Let's say you've sent your document to your proofreader in Word or Google Docs. You receive the proofread text, approve the changes and send the doc on to your designer. Your designer works their magic and returns the text as a pdf. You choose NOT to send the pdf to your proofreader for a second round of checking because you assume all's fine with the layout. 📌 Now if you do that, you run the risk of missing any formatting that's been knocked out during the design; for example, sentences that break off mid-line and continue on the line below: It was a question for fate or the gods to decide. Scenario 2️⃣ Your designer returns the text as a pdf. You make some further changes to the text. You choose NOT to send these new changes to your proofreader. 📌 This is what can happen: Sarah dare not go back on land and leave footprints, and so she made way, cold and wet cold and wet step by cold and wet step, on through the remaining hours of the night. 📌 A whole new paragraph, with glaring errors ("dare" rather than "dared", "her" missing before "way", and duplication of "cold and wet"). This is a real example (which I've had permission to use). My client DID send me the pdf of their book after they had made additional changes. They paid for another round of proofreading. If they hadn't, their book could've been printed with those mistakes (and others). 🟨 So, if you do spot any mistakes in a business book, brochure, blog post, novel, report, ebook, workshop programme, bear in mind that this isn't necessarily poor proofreading. 🟨 The published version sadly isn't always the proofread version. 🟨 Tinkering with text could tarnish your professional proofread. #proofreading #editing #selfpublishing #ContentWriting #MarketingCommunications

What is your proofreading strategy? Proofreading is one important skill everyone who deals with documents and written content should have. It is more important for content writers as they often deal with articles than others. Proofreading is key in content marketing, however, it is one of the least spoken concepts. It involves careful scrutinizing for sentence and word-level mistakes such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting. Everyone has their own strategy for proofreading, the end goal however remains the same, fishing out every mistake that can affect the quality of your documents or content. Tip: proofreading is the focal and final part of the content editing and revising. Revision aims at giving your content flow, organization, and structure. So when formatting your content for final publishing, do the revision before proofreading, the only exception comes when the grammatical errors are too much that it will affect readers' ability to comprehend the content. Your audience and client will not proofread your content for you, and to avoid losing clients and potential audiences, deliberately proofread your content to perfection. Here are a couple of proofreading strategies to leverage for better content delivery: 1. Leave your work for a couple of hours before you start proofreading so that the words can appear new to you. 2. Read your content loud, it helps. 3. If it's possible print before proofreading. 4. Watch out for stylistic errors, and eliminate repetition, 5. ensure your sentence structure is not monotonous, it should vary. There are different strategies you can integrate to proofread your content, and these are just some of the few tested and reliable strategies. Let us know, what strategy do you use for proofreading content?? #proofreading #writing #contentmarketing #writer #doxuments #website

What's the difference between editing and proofreading? 🔵 Editing or copyediting checks for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word usage in text that has not been formatted yet. Copy editors get involved in the text production process at an earlier stage than proofreaders. ➡ Typically, once a copy has been commissioned, an editor will work with the author to bring it up to a publishable standard. Copy-editing also ensures proper and consistent use of voice, style, sentence, and paragraph construction. Copy editors may suggest changes to clarify the writer’s intended message or to improve the fluency of the written text; and they may query the author about content or wording that does not seem to be accurate or logical. #Editing should always precede #proofreading. 🔵 Proofreading brings one final look at documents that have already been edited and formatted, whether by one or several individuals. A proofreader checks for any remaining errors and inconsistencies in use of grammar, language, and format. ➡ Unlike the copy editor, the proofreader is not concerned with improving the text, and it is not his role to make stylistic changes. His/her job is simply to look for clear mistakes (typos, misspellings, etc.) . . . . . Do you need to proofread your texts?
