Something is happening… I’ve been in staffing for almost a decade, and the majority of that time has been specialized in recruiting for finance & accounting. There is a lot to my story & how I’ve gotten to where I am. I believe each person has a story just like mine but also wholly different. The past few months have been filled with truly remarkable humans somehow coming into my orbit. And not just accounting & finance people. $500k/year executives, $25/hour assistants, lawyers, sales professionals, organizational development directors, project managers, government gurus, marketing directors, tech professionals… And they’ve all had one thing in common that makes them remarkable: raw authenticity. Real people, real stories, impressive work histories, and truly outstanding soft skills. I haven’t been seeking these folks out. We just keep finding each other. Referrals. LinkedIn connections. Comments on a post. So… I might need to change my tag line. I may not say I'm specialized in finance & accounting anymore. I may just need to say, “I can find you an outstanding, remarkable human…” because that is what my work world has been overflowing with lately. I believe people flow in & out of our lives for a reason… I’m not sure what the reason is for all of these amazing people coming into my work life is yet… I’ve been in recruiting long enough to know this many incredible people, this wide of a range of people… all being highly intelligent, highly emotionally aware… it’s just not normal to happen at this volume. I think part of it is Jobot. This company attracts great talent, both internally that we hire and externally that we place. I'm so grateful to work somewhere that is focused on kindness & respect. It's authentic here, and authenticity draws people in. So. Something is happening. I just don’t know what yet. And I am darn excited to see what it is…

Where do hiring teams fall flat when starting a finance or accounting search? When assessing a newly created or recently vacated position, a misalignment of the target compensation range, position titling, or a poorly wrote job description will bring the progress of your search to a screeching halt. That is why having the most up to date market compensation ranges, correct titling, and position description in place prior to starting any search, especially finance and accounting, is critical to reducing your time to hire. 🚨 CFOs and Controllers, are you putting your best foot forward when hiring? Recently, I had a conversation with a VP of Finance from a potential new client company. When I inquired about their interview process, they shared, "a 45-minute call with the internal recruiter followed by a 90-120 minute case study.” All before ever speaking with the hiring manager or anyone closely related to finance. 📝 I understand the importance of maximizing efficiency, especially for a "Series C" funded SaaS company. That said, there's a fine line between efficiency and creating a compelling candidate experience. I shared the red flags this will raise for the type of candidates they need. The best accounting & finance candidates are often sought after and appreciate a thoughtful, efficient hiring process that respects their time and expertise. One of the key pillars of my 13+ years of success in executive recruiting has been listening to our clients, understanding their needs, and guiding them to avoid potential pitfalls. For me, it’s not just about filling positions; it's about nurturing long-term partnerships. In this case, our advice was aimed at helping them secure the best talent in the market us or not. In the end, the VP decided to go in a different direction, and we plan to reconnect in 3-4 weeks. I'd like to commend those companies that prioritize the candidate experience. They understand that building strong, mutually beneficial relationships starts with the first interaction and are more likely to attract top talent. I am curious what you think. Do you agree? As Recruiters, we get countless random messages about open positions. Typically they go something like this; "Hey Shawn, I'm an Account Executive with 5+ years, and I'd love to join the team, do you have any openings? Let me know if you think I'd be a fit for any roles you have." This approach is not effective, I don't have the time to job hunt for you, unfortunately the bandwidth simply isn't there. I don't have any AE roles at all, and a quick look at our careers page shows this pretty clearly. Well today I received this message. This is the PERFECT way to approach a Recruiter, about a position you are interested in... I'm not going to specifically name the person, unless she'd like me too, to protect her privacy. I also x'd out certain identifying facts. I do think this was largely written by AI, however, the fact that she applied, reached out specifically about a role, and tied her background into what we could be looking for is quite refreshing. Is she a perfect fit? A solid fit, but not a perfect fit (on paper). Will she get a phone screen, YES SHE WILL. Senior Accountant Role @ MP Materials Hi Shawn, I just applied for the Senior Accountant position at MP Materials and wanted to introduce myself. With over X years of accounting experience, including my roles as X and Accounting Manager at X, I bring a strong background in financial reporting, internal controls, and GAAP. I am confident my skills in managing complex accounting functions and leading teams would be a valuable asset to your team. I'd love to discuss the role - is there a good time to connect? Best,
