Scheduled for release next fall, this biography is not just a tribute to Lewis's contributions to civil rights but also an exploration of his political history and the complexities of his character. Greenberg's research includes hundreds of interviews, FBI files, and materials from Lewis's unfinished book, promising a rich and detailed portrayal of this iconic figure. As one of the United States' most prominent newspapers, boasting a circulation exceeding 700,000 copies, the New York Daily News has etched its name into the city's narrative. The Genesis: 1919 and Mortimer Zuckerman Founded in 1919 by Mortimer Zuckerman, the New York Daily News emerged with the catchphrase "New York's Picture Newspaper," later evolving to "New York's Hometown Newspaper." Despite the transformations, the newspaper maintained its tabloid format, adorned with a plethora of captivating photographs. Beyond the images, the core essence of a newspaper, delivering news, remained at the forefront of the New York Daily News's mission. Diverse Features and Scopes of Interest The New York Daily News, akin to its counterparts, encompasses diverse sections catering to varied interests. Celebrity gossip takes center stage in the infamous Page 6 columns, offering readers a peek into the lives of the who's-who in the industry. A classified ads section, popular comics, a sports section, and an opinion section further enrich the reader's experience. Notably, Bill Gallo, the celebrated sports cartoonist, has left an indelible mark on the sports section. Financial Struggles and Robert Maxwell's Intervention The New York Daily News faced a significant financial downturn in the early 1990s, teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. A lifeline appeared in the form of Robert Maxwell, a millionaire who extended financial support to keep the newspaper afloat. However, with Maxwell's untimely death, his company withdrew its backing, leaving the future of the New York Daily News in uncertainty. The Battle of Opinions: Setting Apart from Competitors In the realm of opinions, the New York Daily News distinguishes itself from competitors. While The New York Times leans liberal in its opinions, the New York Post, a fellow tabloid, adopts a staunch rightist stance. This divergence reflects the rich tapestry of perspectives within New York's media landscape. Sensationalism and Creative Headlines Amidst fierce competition, especially with the New York Post, the New York Daily News turned to sensationalism as a counter-tactic. The newspaper earned acclaim for its creativity in crafting headlines and captions, setting a standard for ingenuity in journalism. Pulitzers and a Storied Legacy Throughout its history, the New York Daily News has been recognized with ten Pulitzer Prizes, a testament to its journalistic excellence. Despite financial challenges and shifting landscapes, the newspaper remains an integral part of New York's media scene, weaving the city's ongoing narrative.
