Reparations There are discussions underway about claims for reparations for the wars in Gaza and the Ukraine and for several conflicts in places like Namibia, DRC and Tanzania in their colonial pasts. Reparations have never been satisfactorily concluded and most were never paid in full, or in part. Some claims, and agreements, have been overlooked or forgotten. Two stand out a particularly unjust - the claim by the Boers for the devastation of the Boer War and the German reparations to Greece for the devastation of the occupation of the Greek Islands during WWII. Studying these two will provide a useful background to the current debate.

Don't miss a riveting discussion of one of the less well understood hot button topics today - how #Russia benefits from the #Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, brought to you by The Washington Outsider #Report on Coalition Radio with Alexandros Itimoudis, who brings a fantastic and thought provoking presentation weaving together seamlessly historical precedents, geopolitical theories, and current events. We discuss * MacKinder's Heartland Theory (whoever controls pivot areas controls the world), how that applied in the past, and what that means now in terms of the Great Power Competition and other geopolitical tensions. * Russian and Chinese influence in #Africa. * Primary global maritime chokepoints and the scramble for geostrategic waterways * The EU-#India trade deal and the European/India/Middle East corridor * France's influence and interests * How important trade routes are reshaped by #China and #India rivalry, economic corridors, and the #Houthi disruption of the #shipping industry in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean * Why #Macron suddenly became hawkish on #Russia and started calling for a stronger #NATO position on #Ukraine * How #Russia is turning the Houthi attacks on freedom of navigation into a #logistics and #transportation opportunity * What role #Greece could play in contributing to the resolution of #MiddleEast trade dilemmas by virtue of its unique historic role in the region and relationships with the #MiddleEast States - and why that's not likely to happen in the near future ... and so much more. Make sure to watch the whole discussion; these insights will blow your mind! #Iran #China #Yemen #militias #proxies #arabworld #thegulf #GCC #UAE #UnitedArabEmirates #KSA #SaudiArabia #Israel #AbrahamAccords #terrorism #counterterrorism #extremism #counterextremism #maritimesecurity #military #security #defense #foreignpolicy #Foreignaffairs #diplomacy #geopolitics

On this day in 1803 – Louisiana Purchase: The United States purchases the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million, more than doubling the size of the young nation. Since France only controlled a small fraction of this area, most of which was inhabited by Native Americans; effectively, for the majority of the area, the United States bought the "preemptive" right to obtain "Indian" lands by treaty or by conquest, to the exclusion of other colonial powers. Why are we not talking about LANDGRAB in the USA by European whites while we discuss Jews capturing Palestinian and Ottoman land as a front end of Europeans, the erstwhile powers of Britain and France?

After the First Punic War concluded in 241 BC, several significant developments and consequences unfolded in the Mediterranean world. The war, primarily fought between the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian Empire over control of Sicily, left a profound impact on both powers. The Treaty of Lutatius marked the end of the conflict. This treaty imposed terms upon Carthage: -Carthage agreed to evacuate Sicily, ceding control of the island to Rome. -Carthage also had to pay a substantial indemnity to Rome as reparations for the cost of the war. -The treaty imposed limitations on Carthage's naval fleet to prevent future conflicts, effectively establishing Rome as the dominant naval power in the western Mediterranean. In the aftermath of the war, both Rome and Carthage faced significant challenges. Carthage, having lost a significant source of wealth and power, began rebuilding its empire, focusing on territories in North Africa and southern Spain. In contrast, Rome had to grapple with the war's economic and social consequences, including the reintegration of soldiers into Roman society. The victory in the First Punic War marked a significant turning point for Rome. The acquisition of Sicily became Rome's first province, setting a precedent for future territorial conquests beyond the Italian peninsula. The First Punic War witnessed significant advancements in naval technology and warfare, including the introduction of the corvus, a boarding bridge that allowed Roman troops to board and capture enemy ships. In the years that followed, the rivalry between Rome and Carthage persisted, serving as a constant undercurrent in Mediterranean geopolitics. The First Punic War acted as a prologue to future conflicts, most notably the epic struggle of the Second Punic War, where the two powers would once again clash in a struggle for dominance. #mylineage #ancient #armor #battle #brasidas #europeanhistory #greece #greek #greekwarfare #helmet #historia #historical #history #hoplite #platea #leonidas #lysander #mediterranean #hephaestion #military #militaryhistory #shield #sparta #spartan #alexanderthegreat #alexander #warhistorical #warhistory #warrior #warriorhistory https://lnkd.in/gHt6AerZ
