We are thrilled to announce our exciting collaboration with Urban Sleeves, a brand that shares our commitment to sustainability and reducing waste. Together, we have created a luxury packaging solution for Winklmayr Leathercraft's exotic leather goods using Urban Sleeves' recycled plastic felt. Seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with innovative design, Urban Sleeves utilises plastic felt made from recycled South African plastic bottles. Cutting-edge techniques were used to create durable wallet boxes. Our collaboration, "Not Adding to the Landfill," celebrates the harmony between sustainable materials and traditional craftsmanship. The versatile nature of recycled plastic felt, combined with Winklmayr Leathercraft's meticulous leatherwork, creates a fusion of artistry and innovation. In a world filled with disposable packaging, we challenge the status quo by redefining luxury packaging. Our collaboration proves that sustainability and exclusivity can coexist, showcasing that eco-conscious choices do not compromise quality, aesthetics, or functionality. The felt boxes, crafted from recycled plastic, become more than packaging; they represent a shared commitment to sustainability and mindful consumption. In short, buy less and better. Join Us at UPMADE IN ESTONIA, a International Spotlight of NYCxDESIGN! Our exploration of Estonia's design contributions to sustainability unfolds in four engaging sections: Tradition and Craftsmanship; Upcycling; Recycling and Biomaterials. TRADITION & CRAFTSMANSHIP: Stella Runnel is developing a wide range of leather bags that are both functional and versatile. In addition to enduring design, they have put circular economy principles into good practice, making them a pioneer in responsible leatherwork. The bags follow a sustainable concept called Round 2, that the brand has developed in-house. Circular design enables the products to be reused, repaired, redesigned and material repurposed again. This means that in addition to buying new products it is also possible to rent them or instead buy preloved bags. There are no decorative details on the products, which enables to maximize the use of the material. As part of this process, customers can return the bag to Stella Soomlais if it gets damaged or there’s no use for it anymore. The material is then repurposed into the smaller designs, and the customer receives a credit towards their next purchase. On the occasion of Oslo Innovation Week, Mark is providing real-time highlights from Oslo, Norway. This is the first of several updates from the session titled "Conscientious Innovation," which explored how innovation, sustainability, and creativity intertwine to make the world a better place. The first 3 distinguished panelists of the morning led us on an eye-opening journey: Christian Lodgaard: As the Chief Design Officer of Flokk, one of Scandinavia's largest furniture manufacturers, Christian delved into the concept of designing products to last. He emphasized the significance of considering materials, structure, and repairability right from the start. The goal in this case study? To create an office chair with lasting value and minimal environmental impact. Brigitte Stepputtis: The Global Head of Couture at the fashion brand Vivienne Westwood, revealed how this fashion icon leads the way in conscious design. Vivienne Westwood's reduced impact strategy includes less frequent collection changes, fewer fashion shows, and streamlining product lines -- and even exploring repurposing bridal gowns. Joana Sá Lima: Joana, a partner and architect at Comte Bureau, introduced us to the idea that sometimes the best decision is not to build anything new at all. She highlighted innovative ways to rethink construction space, design, and waste reduction. Asking the right questions, she argued, can lead to surprising and sustainable solutions. All together, these panelists inspired some key takeaways: 1. The Art of the Possible: Concrete examples showed us what's achievable in the realm of conscientious innovation, dispelling the notion of mere theoretical ideas. 2. Defining Circularity: They provided a clear picture of how individual brands and products can embrace circularity, pinpointing where improvements can be made. 3. Empowering the Consumer: Educating customers about their choices can steer them toward more sustainable options, fostering informed decisions.
