Kacie Peters passing is devastating, and knowing an outcome doesn't make it any easier to process once it's happened. I have many memories with Kacie, and I'm having a hard time widdling this down to know what I want to say or what my theme is. So, in no particular order, here are my thoughts:
Kacie was a powerhouse. She spoke fiercely about her ideals and was never satisfied with mediocrity. She wanted us to do as much as possible for the planet while improving working standards and inequitable cultural norms. I share her vision and hope I can live up to her standards.
Kacie was a connector. She was often one of the first, if not the first, people to schedule coffees with new employees at Pivot to make them feel welcome. She is the most talented networker I've ever witnessed. She could see how people could help each other before they saw it, introduced them, and even checked in to make sure conversations happened. As an introvert, this could be overwhelming. However, ultimately, she did rub off on me in some ways. I can hear her voice telling me, "You're standing in the same place," at networking events, prompting me to move.
Kacie was part of my team. It feels a little weird to call out that I was her boss for the last 3 years. However, I think it's important because this relationship gave me unique insights into her strengths and made me feel responsible for clearing paths for her to maximize her potential.
When we started working together, I told several people that she should be in public relations. Her ability to build a movement through story was unmatched, and she thrived in all public speaking forms. Over the last 3 years, she and I worked to hone her power so she could lead Pivot's public relations, something that made us both immensely proud.
Unsurprisingly, her top Clifton Strength is Activator, meaning she wanted to get started right away 24/7. She was fast. For her, thinking and doing happened instantaneously, and she could get impatient waiting for others to catch up. One of her other top 5 strengths was Positivity. She never let fear of failure or actual failure get in her way. She's the most resilient person I've ever met. I loved her input on my team because she stretched our thinking and made us comfortable with discomfort. She helped me grow as much, if not more than I enabled her to grow, and I will be forever grateful for that.
I feel so lucky to have worked so closely with the woman I met walking in a stairwell, trying to explain PACE Financing to me nearly 10 years ago. My first impression of her was, "That woman was intense." I was right, and over the years, I learned that intensity was fueled by wanting a better world for all of us. She accomplished that, and now it's our job to strive for better.
