Good Will Hunting is one of my favorite movies, and the iconic bench scene with Robin Williams (Sean) and Matt Damon (Will) offers life lessons for all.

This is a pivotal scene in the movie where Sean is trying to get Will to understand what it means to feel and be vulnerable so he will open up in therapy.
Will is an incredibly smart person with a photographic memory and can recite any book, but has never been out of Boston or learned how to really feel anything.
While you can deduce many learnings from watching this scene, and the whole movie, it made me think about how I make decisions.
When I make decisions as shared in my last post (https://lnkd.in/ggf59Ygn), I set my vision, analyze hard data, then feel my emotions.
It is very difficult to make the ideal decision for yourself if you don't have all three, especially the "feeling your emotions" part.
In this scene, Sean says the following to Will, "So if I asked you about art, you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, you know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientations, the whole works, right? But I'll bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling; seen that."
What I'm taking away is, you can do all the research in the world and google every picture, but you will never know what it's like actually being there until you're there and feeling your emotions in the moment.
It's the same with any decision you make, it can fit into your vision and be perfect on paper, but if you get into the interview or step on campus and have a terrible experience or bad gut feeling, it likely isn't for you.
But that's okay, it's up to us to know ourselves well, feel our emotions, and trust that our gut is leading us to the ideal decisions that will be the best match for our vision.
It's worth it to put the time and energy into these three steps to find ideal solutions to big decisions, but we need to be aware of how we feel to make this happen.
It takes a lot of effort to know ourselves well enough to feel our emotions in the moment and trust our gut, but it saves so much time and energy in the long run because it protects you from making decisions that aren't ideal for you.

1. How many natural objects can you find with a line of symmetry?
2. Go bug hunting, can you name them all?
3. Draw a spider's web.
4. Jump in puddles, who can make the biggest splash?
5. Collect some sticks and size order them, Discuss the length of each.
6. Play I-spy on a walk.
7. Use a stick to write your name.
8. Build a den.
9. Go on a flower hunt, how many different types can you find?
10. Draw your favourite find; a flower, leaf, tree or minibeast.
