Some insights into the complexity of rights deals for podcasts, in a world where #IP is king:
"For instance, the creator and/or host of a podcast series will often retain an ownership interest in the underlying property, even as the original recordings are produced and owned by a publisher such as NPR or Vox, a podcast network (Wondery) or a streaming platform (say, Spotify). Securing all the rights necessary to adapt the series for the screen, therefore, can require separate, unique negotiations with multiple entities.
If the podcast series was itself based on pre-existing IP, there may be additional rights owners in the mix, adding a layer of complexity to any option deal.
In this dealmaking, though, podcast creators often have greater leverage to negotiate a narrower grant of rights to a studio or network — and a degree of creative input into any adaptation of their series — than is typical in traditional film or TV option deals for published works."
Reasons for why that is are discussed in the article below. 👇
