Soft skills are not soft and it’s something that AI will have a hard time replacing. It takes a life time of practice and creating experiences that will help you develop them. Just had a really fun conversation with Rachel Sosin, MDes as she interviewed me for her podcast Six Degrees of Innovation. We first talked about Workbreaker, the Zeus Jones report about Rethinking Resiliency at Work, and a discussion that it’s clear a new work culture is emerging- one that is built on honesty, trust, resiliency, collaboration, and experimentation. It’s the freedom to bring out leadership in others. Then we diverged into the concept of dividing your life into semesters, which I feel like we could have had an hour or more discussion about. If you sense you're scared or nervous to try something, what do you do? Do you lean in to the discomfort? Do you avoid it and assume it's not worthwhile or too hard? On our latest #TechLegacies podcast, CIO, Trey Smith recommends that you lean into the fear because it probably means it's something where you can learn. Here's some of his advice: 1. Lean into fear: Recognize that fear often indicates an opportunity for growth. By leaning into fear, you can confront it and move through it. 2. Admit when you don't know: Don't be afraid to say "I don't know." It's honest and can lead to finding solutions collaboratively. 3. Ethics: Lead with ethics in every decision. Being known for honesty and integrity builds trust and credibility. 4. Compassion: Show compassion to your team members. Everyone goes through tough times, and being understanding can foster trust and loyalty. 5. Fearlessness: Fearlessness doesn't mean the absence of fear but rather confronting it and moving through it with honesty, transparency, and compassion. 6. Expand your comfort zone: Every time you move through fear, you expand your comfort zone, making future challenges seem less daunting. 7. Honest communication: Communicate openly about fear and its sources. Addressing fear directly can help alleviate its power. 8. For the last decade+, it's difficult to miss out on resources needed to become great, whatever "great" that means to you. What do I mean by that? Add "the great" after your name, just like Alexander! What is that person like? What should your place in the world be? Have a vision of what you'd look like in your prime. Next, strategy. what do you need to become an expert in? who is like that today that you can mimic, follow, take notes from? what road did they take? will the landscape change to become that person (probably)? Does this mean you'll need to become more innovative and better than this prior great (definitely)? The business landscape of the world is ALWAYS changing. You'll need to form a solid opinion of where things are going. What will this take? follow financial news (innovations are quickly priced into markets and thus reported daily and discussed on financial podcasts), read often, social media icons, network with people in business, science, and society; attend network and speaking events, travel and connect with others outside of your region, etc. This is required to grow, innovate, and improve yourself, your business, and eventually the people you affect. #Leadership #Success #Coaching
