The U.S. Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of up to 40 Lockheed Martin F-35A (Conventional Take Off and Landing) aircraft and related equipment to Greece. According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the estimated cost of a future contract is USD 8.6 billion. “The proposed sale will allow Greece to modernize its air force and improve Greece’s ability to provide for the defense of its airspace, contribute to NATO missions to preserve regional security and defend NATO Allies, and maintain interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces. The F-35 will offset the increasing obsolescence of other Hellenic Air Force (HAF) aircraft such as the F-4 and Mirage 2000. Greece will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces,” DSCA said in a statement. The aircraft are assigned to the 494th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, which is based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia. The F-22s, which are among the most advanced and capable fighter jets in the world recently qualified for USAFCENT "Special Operations", arrived at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on October 22, according to a press release from U.S. Air Forces Central Command. The F-22 deployment is a clear signal that the U.S. is not backing down from its presence and missions in the Middle East, and that it is ready to defend itself and its allies from any threat.
