There continues to be gender disparity in STEM roles. Both in the percentage of women who are in these roles as well as inequalities in pay. This starts with each graduating class. As a fresh graduate, the first job can lay the foundation for salary and opportunities for the entire duration of a person’s career. How can we take action to help women in STEM? An internship is a great way to provide an opportunity for a woman to take her first step on her career ladder. As you seek candidates, work with your internal recruiters to ensure you are able to advertise and attract women from STEM degree programs to apply for your roles. The 10-12 weeks of hands-on work she receives in the summer will provide her with experience to be considered for additional roles once she graduates. And she will always remember her internship and how it helped to launch her forward. As a hiring manager, you can make a difference.
I was dreading International Women’s Day. I’m sorry, but the volume of posts claiming support and empowerment can’t possibly be true, or there wouldn’t be the inequalities we see today. Don’t be like the boyfriend that buys flowers on Valentine’s Day, then is a shit the rest of the time. As the great Cindy Gallop says ‘…don't use words like 'empower' and 'celebrate'. Instead, use words like 'hire', 'promote', 'pay', 'raise', 'bonus', 'fund', 'invest in', 'enrich', 'give equity to', 'put on the board', 'vote for', 'elect', 'lead' - and don't just say it, ACTUALLY DO IT. ‘ … and do it for anyone facing barriers. #IWD2024

This 👇 For anyone who isn’t sure what this day is about. For other women who may, like me, even feel a bit of guilt or self-doubt for making so much noise on gender issues. Who may be worried how they are perceived… could I be the F-word... (eek... a feminist???)? Will that hold me back, knowing my career oscillates between two male-dominated sectors (forestry and energy)? If I get the promotion, will people think it’s because I’m a woman rather than based on merit? (what a wild, opposite idea compared to what has happened over history). How can I express all of this as the only female on the team while not taking away from my male team members, who I really value? Can you both be grateful for your opportunities and privilege but also feel tired of seemingly being the only person who looks, communicates, and feels like you in the room… like in almost every room? Can you balance being authentic while feeling misunderstood? Can you be an advocate for gender issues without being too loud, attention-seeking, and just generally unpalatable? Where do these self-judgements come from? This video hits the nail on the head regarding the fatigue of living within this contradiction. And that it’s also NORMAL and okay to feel tired of all the expectations we and others put on ourselves. #iwd2024 #gender #women #feminist
I sat next to a gentleman on the plane this week and couldn’t help but overhear him as he called his wife before takeoff to tell her how much he loved her and couldn’t wait to see her and their daughter. Towards the end of the flight we started to chat, and he told me about his 14-year-old daughter and it was pretty clear how proud he was of her. He mentioned that he has become a purposeful advocate for women, and is always looking for ways to support and do better. He talked about caring deeply about the world his daughter is growing into and the treatment his wife and female colleagues experience. I couldn’t help but be hopeful that more and more people are thinking like he is, who strive to be inclusive, and seek equity and diversity in all incidences. The clip below is a re-creation from perhaps one of the best movie monologues ever written and was in the Barbie movie. (Thank you America Ferrara). It sadly hits home for too many women. This puts into words what so many women feel daily. For those of you good people out there, who, like the gentleman on the plane, are wondering what more you can do, perhaps hearing this will help you to better understand. Because once we try to understand each other we can better appreciate each other. I hope it will help with what you might be able to do, in both your words and actions, to make sure these aren’t feelings that anybody has to experience. We are equal. We are different, yet the same. Happy #iwd2024 everyone. May your light never be dimmed because someone told you that you have no right to shine.

IWD has just past. The hashtags will be put away until next year, but this is where the real work starts. And it starts with intentional allyship and creating equal enviroments in every way. At our Women of Worley event last week, our committee had an open Q&A session afterwards, during which we were asked how we could encourage men to get more involved in our events. Firas Ali, (Wow committee member) spoke about how important it is to get involved with something you believe in, even when it makes you uncomfortable. About how the uncomfortable thing is often the right thing to do. So here's to a year of getting uncomfortable, finding and promoting allyship everywhere, and creating a world with equal expectations, no matter who or where you are. #InspireInclusion #InternationalwomensDay #Allyship

My journey of Intersectionality : Joining the Makeway - youth panel, has been a transformative experience. Makeway's commitment to intersectionality ensures that no one is left behind, and its impact on my life has been profound; recognising that individuals face intersecting forms of discrimination and oppression based on factors such as race, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, disability, geographical area. Makeway understands that these intersecting identities shape our experiences and access to healthcare, and it actively works to dismantle barriers and promote inclusivity. Through Makeway, I've had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about healthcare access and equity for marginalized young people, advocating for competent healthcare services and challenging systemic barriers to access to information and quality care.Makeway has equipped me with the tools and knowledge to drive positive change in my community. By prioritizing intersectionality, equity and Justice, Makeway is "making way " for Young people; making AAAQSRHR a reality for all. #EmbracingIntersectionalityforHealthEquityandJustice #WorldHealthDay2024 #MakeWayke
