👀 Exploring Parkinson's Law in Product Development! 🕒 It's fascinating how work expands to fit the time allocated for it. In my 11 years as a digital product manager and tech event organizer, I've seen its impact firsthand. 📌 Common Challenges: ⚡️Procrastination — This common phenomenon showed most often when goals were unclear and there was no time pressure. However it could be improved by working on a motivating and outcome-focused team culture and setting clear goals. ⚡️ Scope inflation — Without time pressure and without a clear direction, team members and stakeholders would come up with all kinds of “must-have” features that they thought were essential for an initial product launch. Only when time was scarce, the team was forced to make radical decisions and prioritize rather ruthlessly. ⚡️ Missing sense of urgency — When you shield the software development team completely from the pressures of stakeholders and financial contexts or other higher-level constraints, they can lose their sense of urgency. In my experience, it’s good to help them do productive work, but you need to keep them in the loop about the big picture as well. When you understand Parkinson’s Law, you can use this knowledge to avoid inefficiencies and optimize your product development processes.
