Halfway through my summer internship at Walmart, I wanted to share some observations about corporate life here: 💰 People Currency: At the Home Office, Walmart truly values its people. 💎 Encouraging Excellence: Walmart pushes you to do your best every day, but they also understand the risks and provide support when things don't go as planned. 1️⃣ Customer First: Every business or project-related meeting I’ve attended always includes someone asking, "What does this do for the customer?" or mentioning how it improves the customer's life. The customer is always the priority. 😁 Amazing People: I've met over 700 interns and countless full-time associates, and I genuinely like every single person I’ve interacted with. ❓ Culture of Inquiry: As an intern, I’ve been encouraged to ask questions, and I’ve seen full-timers and even officer-level associates do the same. It’s a great learning environment. ⭐ Exceptional Leadership: This one means the most to me. My VP, Dave DeSerio, has been an incredible leader for the Fuel & Convenience team. He leads by example, follows through on his commitments, and genuinely cares about the entire team. He knows each of us personally and is hands-on in his approach. To an outsider, it might seem unbelievable, but Dave is our guy. Isn’t it crazy that the world doesn’t always expect leaders to be this engaged and knowledgeable about their direct reports? I feel incredibly lucky to have him as a mentor this summer. 🌟 Maximizing My Internship Experience at Ross🌟 I’m thrilled to share how my internship at Ross is helping me develop valuable skills on the sales floor. One of my key responsibilities involves gathering clothes from the fitting rooms and returning them to their rightful places on the sales floor, as well as managing returned items from the registers. This task is more than just a routine; it’s a crucial part of enhancing my understanding of the store layout and inventory management. By organizing and restocking items, I'm becoming more familiar with where everything is located, which greatly improves my ability to assist customers effectively. Through this experience, I’m honing my skills in: •Store Layout Mastery:Getting to know where different products are situated helps me quickly direct customers to what they need. •Customer Service:Being on top of returned items and ensuring the sales floor is well-organized allows me to provide a better shopping experience. •Efficiency and Attention to Detail: Ensuring items are returned to their proper places helps maintain a neat and accessible store environment. During my internship as a Manager at At Home Décor Superstore in Dallas, I spearheaded numerous projects aimed at optimizing store operations and enhancing customer satisfaction. This internship has been a transformative experience, providing valuable insights into leadership, teamwork, and customer-focused initiatives. One of the key responsibilities of my role involved strategically managing projects to relocate and clear products within the store. Balancing time, manpower, and maintaining normal store operations required meticulous planning and execution. This experience honed my project management skills and taught me the importance of adaptability in a dynamic retail environment. A significant aspect of my role was generating Insider Perks and credit card sign-ups. Leading shifts, I focused on engaging customers and successfully increased perks sign-ups by an average of 5-50%. In the month of November, I also had the highest number of At Home Credit Card sign-up's within the whole store. This highlighted the direct impact of proactive customer interaction on key performance indicators at the individual, store, and district levels. Creating an open and inclusive work environment was a priority for me. I encouraged team members to ask questions and provide input, fostering a culture where everyone felt heard, seen, and acknowledged for their contributions. Over the course of my internship, I successfully decreased customer-submitted complaints by an average of 75%, showcasing the effectiveness of prompt and effective issue resolution. In conclusion, my internship at At Home Décor Superstore provided me with a hands-on understanding of leadership, project management, and customer-focused strategies in a retail setting. The challenges I encountered have equipped me with valuable lessons that extend beyond the confines of the store, preparing me for future leadership roles. Walmart- How we Intern. As I reach the half-way point in this amazing internship at Walmart, The Fortune 1 company and Number 1 retailer in the World. I look back on the incredible learning opportunities that I have had, and draw valuable lessons for my career, both now in school at the University of Arkansas WCOB, and in the future. Leading Globally, Learning locally Walmart is a truly massive organization, with over five thousand stores in the United States, operating in nineteen countries around the world, being led by over two million employees. The scale of Walmart is mind-blowing, and daunting when you first come into the organization. However, the small-town feel of Bentonville extends into the corporate culture. Every person in every team that I have met have been helpful, encouraging, and hospitable. The atmosphere of Walmart breeds collaboration, innovation, and best-in-class customer service. We have small teams who collaborate across the business to find innovative ways to serve the customer across all sales channels. “We are a people-led, tech-empowered, Omni-channel retailer, dedicated to helping people save money, and live better.” Working in a Cross-functional team In classes at the Walton college of business, we are taught that cross-functional teams are crucial to the success of a modern, dynamic, innovative business. There is no better example than the Merchandising Operations teams at Walmart. As Merch Ops people, our job is to bridge the river between the Finance teams and the Merchant Teams, supporting both functions with accurate inventory planning, financial forecasting, and analyzing the business in depth. We do this by leveraging the data analytics tools created by in-house teams, which allow us to support many different areas of the business. Serving the Customer “There is one boss: the Customer, and he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down. Simply by spending his money somewhere else.” – Sam Walton While we support functions all across the massive scope of the business, we all united by one common goal, serving the customer. It is the foundation of everything we do at Walmart. Every movement that is done in the business is guided by the principle of “The customer is number one, always”. From day one of starting in the organization, it is evident that the “customer-first” mindset is key to running a high-tech, people-led Omni-channel retailer”. Fall of 2019, I began my college career having not a clue what I wanted to do in terms of a major or a long-term career. I started taking general courses at a local community college while working part-time as a Salesfloor Associate. Shortly thereafter, it seemed as if the world turned upside down, with many rushing to stores to stock up on necessities and essential items. As someone who worked in the store throughout the pandemic, I saw how unforeseen demand impacted our ability to provide for the customer and how the business adapted to the changing consumer shopping habits by leveraging its stores and e-commerce business to meet their needs. Intrigued by the industry's fast-paced development and exponential growth, I knew that I wanted to continue working in retail and focus my career on developing more resilient supply chains. I write all of this to say that it's been an unforgettable experience working for Target this summer as an Inventory Analyst Intern. I learned a lot about the large, ever-growing Target supply chain and worked with some awesome interns on optimizing first-mile truckloads through UOM recommendations. 🤲 Through my experience, I now understand why Target is ranked one of Fortune's top workplaces. The company invests time and resources into its team members, local communities, DE&I initiatives, and sustainability efforts to create opportunity and equity for all. Also, I can't talk about culture without mentioning the great people working at Target. The #caregrowwintogether culture is alive and thriving at Target, thanks in large part to the many great, supportive, growth-minded individuals I've met this summer, from Sr. Directors, Planners, Buyers, IAs, and other interns. 🎯 I'm genuinely grateful to have had the opportunity to spend my time at Target this summer. Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before Starting Summer Internship Part -1 🌟 "Expect the Unexpected" [ Embracing Adaptability] One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my internship at Titan Eye Plus was the importance of adaptability, especially when it comes to planograms. Initially, I assumed that a standard planogram would work for all stores. However, I quickly realized that each store's customer base has unique preferences, requiring tailored solutions. Understanding Economic Diversity 💼 For instance, some stores in economically diverse areas had customers who preferred international brands over house brands. Despite the planogram indicating a focus on house brands, it became clear that adapting the displays to highlight international brands would better meet customer demand and boost sales. Real-World Application 📈 I remember working on a store where this discrepancy was evident. By analyzing customer preferences and adjusting the display to feature more international brands, we significantly improved customer satisfaction and sales. This experience underscored the importance of staying flexible and responsive to the specific needs of each store. The Lesson Learned 🎓 Adapting to these unexpected challenges and customizing solutions for each store has been a crucial part of my learning journey.  My 2-Month Internship Journey at Landmark Group - Max Retail Division 🌟 As I look back on my exciting days of internship at Landmark Group’s Max Retail Division, I’m thrilled to share my experiences and growth. 1. About the Company Landmark Group is a well-known retail conglomerate, and I had the privilege of interning with the Max Retail Division. This division is committed to excellence and provided me with a fantastic learning environment. 2. What I Did a. Creating Motivating Presentations- I got to create PowerPoint presentations on rewards and recognition programs. It was fascinating to explore how we motivate and appreciate employees. 🏆 b. New Joiners’ ID Cards and Reports- I printed personalized ID cards for new colleagues, and I also maintained detailed Excel reports. These reports helped streamline our onboarding process. 📊 c. Sourcing CVs and Scheduling Interviews- I actively sourced CVs for open positions within the company. Coordinating interviews and ensuring smooth scheduling was both challenging and rewarding. 📝 d. Store Visits and Compliance Checks- Regular store visits allowed me to check compliance with guidelines related to a safe and respectful workplace. 🏬 e. Employee Engagement and Fun Activities- I organized fun games and team-building activities to keep our colleagues engaged and happy. A positive work environment boosts productivity! 🎉 f. Tracking Performance and Attendance- Analyzing monthly performance metrics and maintaining attendance records helped me understand our workforce better. 📈 g. Training Coordination and File Audits- I tracked training sessions and ensured employees completed them on time. Additionally, auditing personal files taught me attention to detail. 📚 3. Skills I Gained a. Effective Communication I learned how to communicate clearly and concisely with diverse teams and stakeholders. 🗣️ b. Data Handling and Analysis Excel became my best friend! From pivot tables to VLOOKUPs, I used it to analyze data efficiently. 💡 c. Dynamic Presentations Crafting impactful presentations became second nature. Visual storytelling is powerful! In Conclusion My internship journey has been a mix of challenges, camaraderie, and professional growth. I walked past a long line of interns on campus last week on my way to grab breakfast. Every summer when the interns arrive, I get thrown back in time to the summer of 2010, when I stepped onto Nike's beautiful campus for the first time. It was five days after I graduated, and by sheer will and sheer luck, I never left. Since then, I have met with many, many interns. And over the years, my advice has evolved. But here are the three things I would offer today: 1. Corporate structures can be incredibly intimidating. There is hierarchy and power balances and imbalances innate throughout the corporate world. But the one thing that is true, and will be true regardless of where you go, is that the corporate world is made up of people, of humans. And on that level, no one is more important than anyone else. That is a truth I take with me in every interaction I have. I may be talking to the VP of Whatever, but I am also just talking to a person, with a human life and human interests. And for some reason, that makes it less intimidating. 2. Perform your job well and excel at your projects. And while you do that, meet with as many people as you can. Set up coffee chats like your life depends on it. Every time you meet with someone, ask them for three more names that you should meet with. Ask questions. Tell them about yourself and soak it all up. Being able to mingle on campus is an opportunity that few get. Unlock the network. 3. Let yourself drink the Koolaid. There is a time for healthy cynicism - this is not it. Soak up the magic and brand. Let yourself be enchanted by it. Internships at Nike are pure opportunity - and there are few moments in your late education/early career that will exist for your sole development. This is the perfect moment to buy in and let yourself dream. I did. I still do. In case any of our interns see this post, please don't hesitate to throw time on my calendar in July.
