HBO Max entry into the market - do the opposite of Disney "Streaming service HBO Max has joined the Movistar Plus+ line-up ahead of its reimagining as Max. The Warner Bros. Discovery service is available to subscribers to the Total Fiction (Ficción Total) package." It's a sign of the times, co-operation is key in today's market, and alliances is how you make a play of it. Before, Disney went all in on streaming, and left its partners behind. HBO is doing the opposite, working with key national broadcasters in Europe, like Movistar Plus+ Yes, HBO Max has enough of a name, enough of a back-catalogue to go it alone, but it's learnt from Disney's mistakes. By partnering with big national platforms, they're able to make theirmark, gain a market presence through a big national partner, but also provide something back to them. It then invests the national partner in their own success, rather than the Disney way where they're only interested in their own success. "Congratulations to ITVX as it hits impressive milestone of 2bn streams". Huge respect and and hearty congratulations to ITVX as we have recently reported here https://lnkd.in/gPM_Kq3b From January to June this year, ITVX attracted more viewers with monthly active users (MAU’s) up 29 per cent year on year to 12.5 million and up 19 per cent since year end. The new service is also attracting light viewers, our target audience, with viewing in that specific demo up 93 per cent across the first six months in 2023. And viewers are staying on ITVX for longer with streaming hours up 33 per cent to 737 million hours and a 22 per cent increase in dwell time in the same period. Plus, 86 per cent of those viewers who came into ITVX to watch an exclusive went on to watch other great content on the platform in the first six months of this year. Technology, great original and archived content + a great user-experience all rolled into one have for sure combined to achieve this milestone. Well done to all concerned. NBC and Peacock announced 23M total viewers of the streaming only AFC Wild Card game on Peacock. While they announced it as a "mike drop", it seemed to really be a dropped ball. There were 5M fewer viewers than average viewership for the 2023 Wild Card round, there was no additional value to viewers and they are facing a backlash to the streaming-only approach for the game. This is certainly where the networks and the league want to go, but without delivering additional value to fans, can it be viewed as anything other than a money-grab? https://lnkd.in/gMyW2Mk2

Does that add value to having the operator service? Is that sufficient to offset the base non-content part of the service? That is what every operator needs to be working on right now.

Are BVOD’s the promised land? The UK PSBs and their online strategies are attracting more investment and priority; esp. their o&o offerings with ITV spending £160M on digital first content in 2023, Channel 4 becoming a digital first public service streamer by 2030 and the iPlayer apparently being recast as a streaming versus catch up service.  BVOD is experiencing promising developments, ITVX had a 76% YOY increase in viewing time per person but in absolute terms, iPlayer attracted the highest proportion of a broadcaster’s audience. And they are also popular with younger viewers, as age 25-34 have the highest consumption rate, and possibly as a result, almost two-thirds of BVOD viewing in 2023 was of dramas and entertainment shows, in contrast to  27% for the same genres on linear. Sport and news are the saviours of linear. AVOD growing in #costoflivingcrisis "ITV’s chief executive has told the RTS Cambridge Convention the number of people registered to the platform has now reached 28 million." There was debate whether the launch of ITVX would be meaningful in the beginning, however, much with Disney and its launch of Disney+ right in the middle of the pandemic, timing is everything. "McCall said the increase in available hours from 3,000 hours on the former ITV Hub to 20,000 today meant that viewers who had come in to watch Love Island were now able to find something else to watch. ITVX has benefitted from the development of its data driven platform Planet V that has helped personalise advertising on the streaming service." The huge investment ITV has made to increase its content library, plus the fact that its free #AVOD (there is an SVOD option too) makes it ideal in this kind of environment to flourish. I've also noticed the BBC being more proactive in bulking up its offer on the iPlayer, more and more of the BBC's classic shows are reappearing on iPlayer now, as I guess BBC wants to provide more value to licence-fee payers in this age where cost conscious consumers are looking for cheap and free alternatives to the stacking we saw before.
