Don't call them "stuck," mission leaders say.

Many times in lectures about getting ahead and leadership, we hear the example about how people remember the first man on the moon, but not the second. Well, I think it is a wrong example to quote. The moon mission was a highly disciplined one, with each person having a specific critical role to play. Armstrong was the Commander, Buzz Aldrin the Lunar Module pilot and Michael Collins was the Command Module pilot. They had orders and they all followed them to the tee, without which Neil Armstrong wouldn’t have landed on the moon and safely back to earth. Had any one of them said that they wanted another role, the mission would have fallen apart. This is not to belittle Armstrong’s role, but to highlight that teamwork is of paramount importance and cannot be brushed aside in the quest for personal glory. A better example to quote here would be the Wright brothers. Not formal education and very little resources, they made powered flight possible through constant experimentation, perseverance and effort. What do you think? Do any other worthy examples come to your mind? Would like to hear about them in the comments section below.

"We All Get To The Peak Together, Or We Don't Get There At All." Katherine Johnson, NASA Mathematician Reflecting on the wisdom of Katherine Johnson, whose trailblazing work at NASA changed the course of history. Her words serve as a poignant reminder that leadership is not a solo endeavor. In the modern corporate landscape, conscious leadership goes beyond just the bottom line. It is about recognizing that we are all part of a larger ecosystem. It means fostering an environment where each team member is seen, heard, and valued. When President Kennedy visited NASA in 1962, asked a janitor what he was doing, and the janitor replied, “Well, Mr. President, I’m helping put a man on the moon.” NASA did a great job making sure everyone knew what they were working towards, and that helped every individual think about how his actions affected that goal. A great leader always focuses on keeping his goal front and center in everyone’s mind in the team to achieve great results. #leadership #mindset

As we observe President's Day today, I reflect on a story that encapsulates the essence of leadership and respect in the workplace that features my favorite president, John F. Kennedy. During a visit to the NASA space center in 1962, Kennedy introduced himself to a custodian and asked about his role at the space center. The custodian gave President Kennedy a simple and profound response: "Mr. President, I am helping to put a man on the moon." This anecdote resonates deeply with me, as it underscores the importance of recognizing the value of every individual's contribution. As leaders in our own workplaces, we must cultivate a culture of respect and appreciation, where every team member feels valued. By acknowledging the importance of every role, we foster among our employees a sense of purpose and commitment to the organization's mission. In the vast expanse of human achievement, few names resonate with the profound simplicity of greatness quite like Chris Hadfield. Esteemed as "the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong," Hadfield's journey encompasses roles as a tactical fighter pilot, astronaut, first commander of the ISS, musician, speaker, and author. Yet, it is not merely his accolades that inspire, but the humility with which he carries them. In my formative years, I was immersed in a culture where the Dunning-Kruger effect thrived, and what we now term as toxic masculinity was the prevailing norm. Against this backdrop, encountering figures like Hadfield was nothing short of revelatory. Here is a man who, despite his monumental achievements, chooses the path of modesty—sitting casually on a cooler in the back of a jeep at the Gatineau Air Show, without the trappings of armored vehicles or an imposing entourage. Humility, I have come to believe, is the hallmark of true strength. It humanizes us, garners respect, and bridges connections in a world that often celebrates superficial grandeur. For us, as men navigating the complexities of modern life, there is a profound lesson in Hadfield's example. Let us embrace humility not as a sign of weakness, but as a testament to our inner fortitude and wisdom. Let humility be our signature, a quiet but powerful statement of our character. #MensStyle #Humility #ChrisHadfield #RoleModel #Leadership #CharacterBuilding #Inspiration #PhilosophyOfLife

We were honored to have Jacobson's Steven Brown and Forrest McGowan attend the Toolbox Ministries luncheon this week, where they heard from retired US Army Colonel and NASA Astronaut Shane Kimbrough. Col. Kimbrough captivated the audience with his profound insights on leadership and service. Having commanded the International Space Station during Expedition 50, Col. Kimbrough knows a thing or two about leadership and innovation. He is also one of only four individuals to have flown on three different spaceflights, totaling 388 days in space, nine spacewalks, and 60 hours of spacewalking. His extraordinary experiences offered these key leadership takeaways: ☄️ Get in the trenches with your team. ☄️ Communicate clearly and often. ☄️ Tackle the tough jobs head-on. Even if you fail, you'll gain valuable lessons. ☄️ Prioritize service above self. #leadership #NASA #Toolbox #JacobsonInsurance #BusinessInsurance #RiskManagement
