Tuesday's Tower Defense Tip: Let's talk passwords. Passwords are often configured insecurely, not maintained or re-used which leads to many of our teams network compromises and access to systems. LTS Strong Password Guidelines: 1. Length- atleast 16 characters. 2. Complexity - use special characters, numbers and upper/ lower case. 3. Make them unique, and don't re-use passwords. 4. To avoid forgetting them, store them in a secure and encrypted password manager application. 5. Don't create easily guessable passwords, no season, year, company names, personal names, pet names etc. You can reference the list here of examples to avoid: https://weakpasswords.net/ Additionally, you can check online password breach repositories to see if your accounts have ever had their passwords dumped: haveibeenpwned.com

Definitely take some time to read up on this and see if you are affected. If you are or even think you are, or you're just concerned you are, be proactive and change passwords. There is also mention of SSN info included, so monitor your credit closely and utilize credit freezes and/or locks to your advantage!

“As part of the new prevention measures, CrowdStrike said it’s also beefing up internal testing as well as putting in place “a new check” to stop “this type of problematic content” from being deployed again.” Sloppy coding, sloppy testing cannot be blamed on just developers and testers. It boils down to inordinate pressure being put on security and development teams by executives and shareholders to meet aggressive timelines and therefore revenue expectations. While the direct cause of the CrowdStrike issue may be addressed through beefed up testing, we need to recognize the root cause of the problem. Until and unless timelines and controls are managed and maintained based on estimates provided by folks on the ground, issues like the one from last week will continue to bubble up. So let’s not focus on, and run with, the band aid checks and improvements that organizations promise AFTER a catastrophic event, but rather advocate for responsible delivery of quality solutions that respect the proactive recommendations of SMEs. https://lnkd.in/gw44SKEf
