During this time the game industry's turbulence is shocking, and the launch of a new game studio like Simply Sweet Games might seem like a wild venture. However, I am deeply proud of my journey towards building inclusivity, equity, and diversity in gaming. After all, these values have been the driving force behind my decision to establish a new game studio with the amazing Tina Merry. Spaces like DIG are essential now more than ever. They remind us that our choices as leaders and creators can either lead to significant industry improvement or, unfortunately, to a collateral wasteland of effort and broken dreams. #realtalk For anyone recently affected by industry layoffs, I highly recommend taking a moment of rest. We all play games. Whether it’s board games, card games, or computer games, the game’s designer tells us, the participants, what abilities we’ll have, what obstacles we’ll face, and, most importantly, what we’re going to care about. The way the game’s designer dictates what we’ll care about is through a point system, one where we’ll both keep points and be told how to earn more points. We can think of the consumer culture we live in as culture that hooks us on its games. Video games offer entertainment and a sense of community for many, yet for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV), these experiences are largely inaccessible. Most video games are not designed with BLV players in mind. And games specifically created for BLV players tend to lack the depth and complexity found in mainstream titles. The challenge is not just about creating accessible games but ones that are *equivalently* accessible — ensuring that BLV gamers can dive into the same vibrant worlds and enjoy equally enriching experiences as their sighted counterparts. "Gaming is easy to access, and authentic storytelling in games can help you to understand yourself better or feel less alone in your experiences." Video games have become a safe virtual space for queer individuals to find belonging and community, that is not available for them in the physical world. In June 2020, we saw ACNH become a host for pride during the covid lockdown, indie games pushing boundaries for more queer stories and LGBTQ+ characters, and finally a rise in representation in AAA games! I have spent the past few weeks interviewing trans* players about their experience with the character creation aspect of RPGs. A common theme that constantly arises is the ability to explore identity and play out authentic queer storylines. I'm thrilled to see more discussion around queer gaming communities and experiences, and hope this is a sign we are moving towards more authentic representation!
