#privatecitizen #diversity #inclusion #barbie DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION LESSONS FROM BARBIE According to a 'The Journal of Experimental Child Psychology's' report from 2019, interactive play with doll-shaped ambassadors of diversity, like Barbie, could lead to reduced biases and more positive racial attitudes. And let’s be honest, making the world a better place through dolls sounds way more fun than a lecture in a stuffy auditorium, right? In 1997 Mattel introduced the first Barbie with a disability with their Fashionista in a Wheelchair doll. And in 2023 Barbie announced a Barbie with Down Syndrome! Way to go Mattel! And guess what? Diversity doesn't just make the world go around; it makes the cash tills ring. Mattel reported a 7% increase in sales after Barbie started to spread her diverse wings. And profits have been climbing! Consumers are clearly voting with their wallets for companies that reflect reality and not just the "perfect" airbrushed facade. Profits aren’t kids’ stuff. Is your company poised to learn from the example of Barbie?

1. Inclusion Evolves: Barbie champions diversity—35+ skin tones, 94+ hairstyles, 9+ body types. Inspiring girls to break barriers in fields previously uncharted. And showcasing the rich tapestry of Black, indigenous, and women of color in her Role Model series. 2. Mistakes, Growth: Barbie's path wasn't without stumbles, but it teaches us that change takes time. Uphill climbs make us resilient, even more so when we embrace transformation with open arms. 3. Unconventional Narratives: The big screen showcased Barbie's magic—embracing diversity, led by the amazing Margot Robbie. Let's remember that powerful stories challenge norms and linger long after the credits roll. 4. Your Spotlight: The "This Barbie is..." filter made us part of the magic, celebrating each unique persona. A reminder that our brand isn't just ours—it's yours too. Your voices shape our journey. Marketers' Takeaway: Barbie's evolution reminds us that legacy revitalization needs patience, commitment, and inclusivity. We're on this journey with you, learning and growing every step of the way. #BarbieReimagined #InclusiveBrand #DiverseNarratives #InspiringChange

Spot on. The Barbie Dream Gap Project is a powerful campaign challenging gender stereotypes and biases that hinder young girls from reaching their full potential. It urges collective action to nurture girls' confidence and empower them as dreamers and doers. https://lnkd.in/ey7d7Gbg We are all a role model for someone. In leadership, whether at work or in personal roles like parenting and mentoring, the principles of model, coach, and care are pivotal. To bridge the dream gap and ensure equal opportunities for all, we must confront our unconscious biases. Be aware of our impact on others. As role models, let's lead by example, championing equality and empowering every girl to dream big. #CloseTheDreamGap #Empowerment #mattel #diversity

This is what mother-daughter activities typically look like in our family. Girls of 10 and 4 x 10 enjoying time together in the dojo 🥋 or bouldering 🧗♀️ . When I was 10, I never cared for Barbie . On the contrary even, it was the female image I wanted to distance myself from. But after doing this great research piece for Mattel, Inc. three decades later, I just ordered my 10-year-old her first Barbie dolls. Barbie has previously faced criticism for perpetuating narrow gender and beauty standards among young girls and I definitely was one of those critics. 👠 As a girl I felt the doll confronted me with gender stereotypes and societal biases, limiting my choices. Later, as a mum of a girl (and also a boy), I realized how today still girls are held back from reaching their full potential and that toys like Barbie have a role to play in that too. So as a girl, as a mother, and as a research professional, I was more than enthusiastic to learn about the DREAM GAP project by Mattel, standing up to champion the boundless potential of girls around the world. 👧 And about the role Human8 got to play in that as a research partner: https://shorturl.at/lwBEN Through cultural insight and semiotic research across six different global markets 🌐, Human8 embarked on a mission to understand the unique challenges that young girls face. This in-depth exploration allowed us to gain a better understanding of how ‘affirmative influencers’ showed up for young girls in the emergent cultural context and how they were empowering young girls to challenge and overcome constraining gender stereotypes. 👨🚀 Where I used to ban Barbie out of my house, I may start to embrace her as a fellow role model for my daugther. I hope she’ll like her dolls when she unwraps them at Christmas… 🎁 And I bet she’ll braid or cut those long hairs straight away. If those hairs go the wrong way dear Barbie, you may fall or get punched in the face. But when you fall, stand up tall and go again! #Human8 #DoWhatMatters #PositiveChange #girlpower

Businesses can sponsor LGBTQIA+ performances, productions, and events, providing platforms for queer voices to shine and stories to be told authentically. Funding diverse productions that center LGBTQIA+ experiences, themes, and characters is essential for promoting representation and amplifying marginalised voices in entertainment. By investing in diverse storytelling, businesses not only support LGBTQIA+ creators but also contribute to a more inclusive and representative cultural landscape. Ensuring equal opportunities for LGBTQIA+ performers and creators requires proactive efforts to dismantle systemic barriers and promote inclusivity. Let’s talk about the Dream Gap
A powerful, thought-provoking campaign from #Barbie! The Dream Gap is the space in between young girls’ wildly imaginative ambition and their full potential—hindered not because they’re incapable, but by the society they grow up in. Conscious and unconscious biases try to water down their dreams early on, but the Barbie Dream Gap Project is on a mission to close the gap by challenging gender stereotypes and helping undo the biases that hold girls back. And while they’re driving awareness with this campaign, I think we all know it’s going to take an even bigger collective effort. We have a responsibility to close this gap for the next generation of girls—to nurture their #confidence, reinforce their abilities, and lift them up as dreamers and doers! Mattel, Inc.
