A senior researcher at the University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health, Dr. Jacob Lorenzo-Morales has been working on free-living amoebae (FLA) for the last ten years, with his main research field being on the Acanthamoeba genus, trying to identify potential targets using siRNA to develop novel therapeutic approaches against this pathogen. The "Water" conference is a really important event for us. It's organized every year by the Wasserchemische Gesellschaft, which is a specialist group of the German Chemical Society (GDCh). This year, we from the Institute for Analytical Research (IfAR) - Hochschule Fresenius were represented with three posters dealing with current research questions. These included: 1. What influence does the lifestyle of the population have on wastewater composition? This is a relevant topic in times of economic and social transformation! We're excited to share that we're expanding the classical approach of wastewater-based epidemiology. 2. We're also exploring how we can record the temporal dynamics of wastewater composition. Wastewater is complex, both in terms of quantity and composition. The substances entering the sewers are often short-lived and subject to rapid changes. To capture this, we tested a simple solution for wastewater sampling in two applications. 3. How can we simulate single particle ICP-MS analysis of nanoparticles in silico? The answer to this question would be really helpful for research and our students too! I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest research paper, "Wastewater-Based Proteomics: A Proof-of-Concept for Advancing Early Warning System for Infectious Diseases and Immune Response Monitoring," in the Journal of Hazardous Materials Letters. This study represents a significant step forward in the field of public health surveillance and environmental protection, showcasing the potential of mass spectrometry-based bioanalytical pipelines to measure cause-response associations between pathogen stressors and immune responses. Our findings not only enrich our understanding of disease dynamics but also lay the foundation for future research towards refining analytical techniques to extract more precise data from complex matrices. It's important to note that this work was developed and conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the importance of advancing surveillance and monitoring strategies for infectious diseases. I would like to express my profound gratitude to Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern for her unwavering support and guidance throughout this work. I am also grateful to Harry Elliss for his assistance in the laboratory and his contributions to the manuscript. Our study on #metals in #tampons is highlighted FutureFemHealth
“To our knowledge, this is the first paper to measure metals in tampons. Concerningly, we found concentrations of all metals we tested for, including toxic metals like arsenic and lead.” Jenni Shearston, Lead Author. University of California, Berkeley Scientists measured the levels of 16 heavy metals in 30 tampons from 14 brands for a new study by UC Berkeley and Columbia University. "Our study clearly shows that metals are also present in menstrual products, and that women might be at higher risk for exposure using these products." Did you know that #WHO released the #FirstEverList of #LifeThreateningFungi in 2022? #Aspergillus is a common mold that was placed at the critical priority group of WHO’s list. Additional research for the diagnosis and treatment of Aspergillus-related diseases is needed. Exciting research this month from University of Bath on iuc3 plasmids in Klebsiella pneumoniae. Working with MicrobesNG, the team used a combination of short and long reads to characterise iuc3-carrying plasmids from K.pneumoniae isolated from Thailand and Italy 🦠 A key finding was the identification of seven large plasmids that likely emerged through hybridisation of co-circulating plasmids harbouring iuc3 and antimicrobial resistance genes.
