Millions of children are now caregivers at home without any government recognition, pay or support. Nonprofits lend a hand, but the kids need more. Government needs to step in or risk losing these kids quietly taking on grownup responsibilities. “No child in the United States should have to drop out of school or life to provide care for family members,” said Connie Siskowski, founder of the nonprofit American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY), which advocates for and supports young caregivers. https://lnkd.in/ga-Cn-nQ

https://lnkd.in/ecVqMwXG 5.4 million caregivers under 18 providing care for parents, siblings and grandparents and according to one source "literally nothing out there in the way of government benefits," despite executive actions aimed at caregiving adults. There is some non-profit support, and I would add there are things that can be done through the school system including higher education. This author is focusing on insurance options which you might want to review. I support that, and also community and other institutional intervention, e.g houses of worship, schools, after-school programs. if you are active in any organizations, why don't you put this on your agenda. #newagingpartnership #caregivingconfidential

There are currently over 83,000 children in the care system in England, and at the current rate of growth of 2% a year, this figure is set to hit 100,000 within the next decade. Children growing up in care often lack the stability and support that we all need to thrive. They are often moved across different placements and parts of the country, sometimes miles away from their family, friends, school, and community, which can have a harmful impact on their wellbeing and life chances. Then when young people approach 18 and leave the care system, they often experience a ‘care cliff’, with their placements abruptly stopped and facing a lack of emotional and practical support that every young person needs to thrive in adulthood. Coram, a vibrant charity group of specialist organisations, champions the voices of children and young people in care, getting their views heard in decisions that matter most to them. Our approach recognises that children and young people are experts in their own life experiences and need to be central in the decision-making processes that affect them. Through the Coram Voice helpline and advocacy service, thousands of young people each year are supported to get their voices heard and to access their rights in relation to their safety, housing and entitlements. Coram Voice runs the largest survey of its kind, exploring the views and wellbeing of thousands of children in care and young care leavers, working with local authorities to help improve the care system based on their responses. The charity also runs a network led by care-experienced young people to raise awareness of key issues and influence government. In addition, the charity hosts a national annual creative writing competition, ‘Voices’ for care-experienced children and young people to further amplify their voices and showcase their talents. Claire was a winner of Voices in 2020 and now is active in her role as a care experienced consultant with Coram Voice, using her own experiences of care to improve the system for others. Claire says: “Coram has provided me with opportunities I could never have dreamt of. The care system was supposed to be a “stain on my record” but really it projected me into positions such as working with parliament and councils. Because of Coram, I have really become a better version of myself, and I can’t wait to continue growing.” We are pleased to welcome Claire as a co-host of Voices 2024, alongside Peter Capaldi. If you are tuned into the nonprofit scene in Seattle, you have probably heard the term “Community-Centric Fundraising.” The goal of the Community-Centric Fundraising (CCF) movement, which started in Seattle, is to make fundraising more equitable, to lift the voices of people of color and others most affected by social inequities, and to advance practices that will effect meaningful progress towards solving systemic societal issues. Learn more about the 10 principles at the heart of the CCF movement, what they mean to us, and how we are working to apply them across the work that we do on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gjNaJAuF #childcare #fundchildcare #childcarematters #communitycentricfundraising

Who Are Caregiving Youth? Caregiving Youth are young people aged 18 and under who provide care or support for family, relatives, or household member(s) of any age who require assistance due to chronic (3 months or more) illness, age-related decline, disability, or other health condition. Why Should We Care? Caregiving for a loved one is among the most demanding, challenging, and rewarding human activities. Although children are commonly thought of as the recipients of care — rather than the givers — children all over the world participate actively in caregiving every day. The U.S. does not yet have formal policies or support systems in place for these young people as we do for adult caregivers. Furthermore, schools do not typically identify or provide support for Caregiving Youth, which puts them at risk for academic, social, and emotional challenges. There Are over 5,400,000 Caregiving Youth in the U.S. -More than 70% assist a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent. -Many care for disabled siblings or other family members. -34% help more than one person in the household. Data Source: Caregiving in the U.S. 2020 – AARP Research Report – National Alliance for Caregiving (National Alliance for Caregiving) and AARP. Acknowledging the strain that caregiving responsibilities place on middle and high school kids is crucial, as recognition and identification of this hidden population are key to creating change. It's equally important to emphasize the role of a support network in their well-being. Children involved in caregiving should have access to resources and assistance, including caregiver coaching, counseling, respite activities, and support groups. Our team is working on expanding services and support for these young caregivers everywhere. We can't do it without the help of donors, partners, volunteers, and political leaders.
