Melissa McCart, EdD, CBIRT Director responded, "Following concussion, the goal is to not let a temporary injury change the trajectory of a person’s life. Temporary accommodations allow a person to recover without life altering impact. If we put in supports immediately, we reduce the likelihood of long-term impact. Most kids recover, but they need temporary accommodations, so they don’t fall behind and get in a cycle of failure." In April 2021, Nathan was playing outside with friends when he was hit by a bus as he was attempting to cross a road. As a result of the collision, he sustained multiple physical brain injuries, including a right frontal fracture, right orbit fracture and right sinus fracture. We were able to be there for Nathan and his family, but there are many more children and their families we still need to reach. Childhood acquired brain injury affects at least 40,000 children a year, and its impact is truly devastating for the entire family. I am sure you can imagine the heartache, fear and uncertainty they face without proper support. But you have the power to change lives. We need to urgently reach more families and we need more ABI coordinators out in the community providing families with the emotional and practical support they need. Tori Dach coordinates their Intimate Partner Violence and Brain Injury Program, and kindly agreed to share a little about herself. 🧠 Where are you from? Victoria, BC 🧠 What is your area of study/expertise? Brain Injury Program Development and Service Delivery 🧠 What do you do in your research/work? I explore and execute ways in which women living with a brain injury as a result of intimate partner violence can receive brain-injury informed support services focused on improving daily living activities. 🧠 Why does it matter? Because when brain injury is factored into healing and recovery plans, support includes navigating how they brain processes information differently post-injury. 🧠 What is one thing you think everyone needs to know about BI in IPV? That it is so incredibly prevalent. And once we know that we can't un-know it, opening our minds to creative and innovative ways to do things differently leading to more safe and successful outcomes for survivors.
