This brought me into the aged care industry. It’s not what you think. I grew up in a household where both my parents were dedicated nurses. Care was more than just a concept to me — it was a way of life. The essence of ✅ Compassion ✅ Respect & ✅ Quality care was woven into my DNA from the very beginning. I was just amazed growing up that caring is a job. Because I find it really enjoyable & soul fulfilling. Last week my daughter’s preschool had a Community Hero themed week. Her teacher asked if I would come in and talk to the kids about being a nurse. It was the best. I brought my stethoscope for them to listen to their own hearts. They got to wear gloves and I made little finger splints for each of them. To be honest, I don’t always enjoy talking about being a nurse, or maybe it’s just the questions/comments that usually follow: ‘What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen?’ ‘ER’s are the worst. Everyone is so slow’ ‘Do you really see people die?’ But this, this was so fun. And their questions and comments never disappoint: ‘Do you take care of aliens?’ ‘Why do hospitals smell weird?’ We came up with stories for why they needed finger splints. We talked about why our hearts make that ‘bump bump’ sound. We made glove balloons. We talked about how sometimes hospitals can feel scary, and how it’s okay to ask doctors and nurses question about what is making us feel scared. My most favorite part of the morning was my daughter’s introduction: ‘This is my mommy and she is a NURSE. She helps people feel better and she’s really good at it.’ Wow. I didn’t think there was anything better than the feeling of being proud of your kids. In our day-to-day lives, how can we become attentive to the need to look after ourselves and therefore others as well? ‘Self-awareness is not egotistical. On the contrary, it means you can go back to being available to another person; to the person you’re with; to yourself.’ Gerda Zölle set up the consultancy service for caring professions at #WALA and has supported people experiencing exceptional life circumstances for over 40 years. An #expert in anthroposophic nursing (IFAN), she shares her rich stores of experience through lectures and publications, as well as by teaching students of caring professions. Self-awareness leads to self-esteem – this is fundamental according to Zölle, but it is also hard work.
