It makes the person recruiting the role reflect on what they are asking for, and how realistic it is. 2. It gives the candidate an opportunity to assess whether the role is really for them. Or to get excited at the challenges of the role. 3. It is so transparent and such a simple but important demonstration of their value of 'Open'. To all my former coworkers at Bank of the West who’ve been affected by layoffs, just remember the old adage from Alexander Graham Bell “when one door closes, another opens”. This has been my experience from my own experiences with layoffs. In no particular order…. -> Because of a layoff, I was able to leave behind organizationa/leadership goals that werne’t in alignment with my own. -> Becuase of a layoff, I would have never gotten a contract at Seattle Children’s that altered how I look at work. -> Becuase of a layoff, I would have never been CISO of Group Health Cooperative, which matured my perspective in how to manage cybersecurity work within highly regulated, yet people centric organizations. -> Because of a layoff, I got to spend 3 months with my kids, over the summer, in the PNW, in a tough time for all our lives. We got to spend time camping (in a yurt!), and saw the Spruce Goose…all without time constraints or significant obligations. -> Because of a layoff, I got to think about what I *wanted* to do, and *for whom*. I’d argue layoffs have provided me with the most clarity of purpose and mission I’ve had in my career. Take advantage of the time and opportunity that this circumstance gives. It’ll be worth it. Sure, we all have bills, and we all have careers that we don’t want to stumble, but just remember, you are skilled. You do have talents. You are what brought BotW to the point it is today. Don’t think about the decisions made at the macro level are personal indictments of you as an individual. YOU’RE the reason for their success.
