The structure of the sodium-ion battery industry chain is similar to that of lithium-ion batteries, and the key changes are in the cathode and battery companies. Among the three cathode material routes, LTMO and polyanion compounds are in the same system as ternary batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries respectively, and all have a good commercial foundation. Prussian blue compounds are a unique system for sodium-ion batteries and require supporting commercialisation. Mainstream anode material manufacturers have entered the market one after another. In addition to cathode and anode materials, the current collectors, electrolyte, separator, and battery packaging of sodium-ion batteries can be co-produced using the established industrial chain of lithium-ion batteries, and therefore the commercial foundation is good. The commercialisation of sodium-ion batteries is accelerating with more than 20 companies investing in the commercialisation of sodium-ion batteries. China companies mainly include Zhongke Haina, Natrium Energy, and CATL. At present, the planned production capacity of sodium-ion batteries in China is around 19GWh. Outside of China companies mainly include Faradion from the UK, NAIADES from EU, Natron Energy from the US, and Kishida Chemical, Toyota, Panasonic, and Mitsubishi Chemical from Japan. https://lnkd.in/gdXFBYhA #sodium #lithium #batteries

In the US, there are at least 40 planned projects related to NMC production over the next five years, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights data, with imports currently dominating supply to this expanding cell manufacturing industry. 📌 For light-duty electric vehicles, high-nickel content NMC batteries are forecast to take a near-50% market share globally by 2030, according to S&P Global Mobility, and are expected to remain the leading battery chemistry in the US electric vehicle battery market.

First Phosphate Corp (CSE: PHOS) CEO John Passalacqua and American Battery Factory of Utah (ABF) President John Kem joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss a recently announced a pivotal agreement between their respective companies aimed at advancing the production of up to 40,000 tonnes of #lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode active material (CAM) in North America. This groundbreaking collaboration comes with significant implications, as it seeks to establish a robust LFP battery production ecosystem for the burgeoning battery storage sector in North America. The partnership involves a strategic approach to address various aspects of LFP CAM production. Under this agreement, the annual value of LFP CAM production is expected to range from $500 million to $1 billion, contingent on future raw material prices. Lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cell costs fell massively through 2023, due to falling lithium prices. The wider impact of this is that Chinese companies have successfully commodified LFP and the domestic market is being flooded with cheap LFP cathode material and cells. The CRU Battery Cost Model reveals how the production cost of LFP cells in China closely follows the lithium price. Lithium accounts for the majority of raw material cost makeup of LFP. Also, LFP materials and their production processes are already well-optimised and approaching practical limits in China, so there are only incremental improvements in performance and yield rates. However, the above is not the case for chemistries with a wider raw material split, manufactured in other countries, or for new upcoming technologies. In these scenarios, the relationship with lithium is more complex with greater fluctuation over time. LMFP’s cost advantage is heavily dependent on lithium price! CRUs head of battery costs Aaron Wade recently highlighted how Lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) cathodes are set to take further market share away from nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) in the near future: https://lnkd.in/ehGbK8hs. Through increased energy density, LMFP cathodes will offer a cost advantage over the current market leader lithium iron phosphate (LFP). However, the price of lithium has a large impact on the extent of this cost saving. Shown in the figure below, as of November-2022 the estimated cost for China-based production of LFP and LMFP cells was 108 $/kWh and 95 $/kWh respectively. As lithium prices have declined this year, so too have the costs for LFP and LMFP cell production, reaching 56 $/kWh and 51 $/kWh as of November-2023. The cost reduction from the switch from LFP to LMFP has been cut by 8 $/kWh in this time showing how lower lithium pricing will make the cost of the cathode less impactful on overall cell cost. This means in a low-lithium price scenario more importance should be given to other cell costs as their relative percentage of cost is greater than the cathode alone. Furthermore, another factor that could affect this cost differential is the production route of LMFP. Utilising a solid phase method yields a marginally lower cost compared to a liquid phase (hydrothermal) method. The former route typically uses a manganese carbonate (MnCO3) or a manganese tetroxide (Mn3O4) precursor, whilst the latter uses manganese sulphate (MnSO4). So far, Chinese companies are adopting both methods, however a change in precursor price may sway manufacturers to predominantly choose one production route in the future. First Phosphate Corp (CSE: PHOS) announced it has struck a major new agreement with American Battery Factory Inc to support the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode active material (CAM) in North America. The two companies will collaborate on the production of up to 40,000 tonnes of annual fully North American manufactured LFP CAM. Both First Phosphate and ABF have agreed to mutually beneficial arrangements that extend until 2028. However, the final details of their customer-supplier relationship will be defined in a definitive agreement. That agreement will be established once both companies successfully source an established LFP technology partner to assist in servicing ABF's LFP CAM production requirements in North America.
