Labels are for the things men make, not for men. The most primitive man is too complex to be labeled. -Rex Stout, novelist (1 Dec 1886-1975) I used to be a label queen- from NYC. The other day, I caught up with a friend of mine from private school. Twenty-years had passed since we last spoke. Every other word out of her mouth was Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Mikimoto. It was curious. Twenty-years ago, every word out of her mouth was the same. Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Mikimoto. Not necessarily in that order, but in almost every conversation. So, I threw in Art Basel, Miami, Leila Pinto, Stephen Gamson and Jeff Koons' dog. She paused. Then resumed her luxury designer rant. Stating that if she came to opening night with me to meet an artist I was in LOVE with, Leila Pinto, she could not stay with me. She had to stay at the Mondrian. I insisted she stay with me. Why spend all that money on an expensive hotel? I live in Aventura, it was easier to Uber to Art Basel in South Beach than going from the Mondrian on Brickell and stand there until I arrived. Then she said she'd stay at the Turnberry Hotel. Down my block. Everything was set to go. Then she called me again. Said she'd thought about it, and couldn't be my friend anymore. She knew that would crush me, but she had to do it. Then she hung up the phone. It felt like she assigned a label to me. I wasn't haute couture enough for her. So this quote by Rex Scott, is exceptionally prescient. Doesn't everyone do that to everyone these days? Especially in this job market. It feels strangulating. Now, if I had to label my friend, of forty years +, literally, it wouldn't be Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Mikimoto. It wouldn't even be Mondrian. I don't know actually if one word could describe her. But if I had to describe what she was made of - like most labels include the material their things are made from - 100% Spanish silk, the finest leather, deep-sea Tahitian oyster-pearls - I would have to say one of her materials were painfully cruel. And that's how I'll always remember her. I sure hope potential creative director's, headhunters or recruiters use that same logic. Because that would make them monsters. Painfully cruel monsters.

This would have been incredible a couple of years ago! The leader from black and white analogue film material Harman Photography introducing a colour negative film, fittingly called Phoenix! Interestingly, it is advertised to have visible grain, halation and coating anomalies! Far from meaning poor production standards, these "mistakes" are advertised to catch the attention of a target group looking for a creative process which integrates surprises along the way.... far away from the digital perfection mainstream! Another hint for this trend is the popularity of adapting vintage lenses that came from a time in which quality spread in the production created lenses with "individual character" to modern mounts. As a standard technology analogue film based technology advertised perfection. As an underdog technology ( and in a far smaller market) it know advertise irregularities as creativity enablers.
