Musicians, filmmakers and people who are behind the scenes---build your brand! The loudest in the room usually get the most and best opportunities. Most of us aren't signed to a record label or don't have multi-million studios to distribute our content. However, we live in the world where we can compete with the biggest personalities and brands in the world. Prior to "social media" one would usually have had to spend ten of thousands to millions of dollars to reach a decent size audience 10 thousand people. Today, we can build audiences organically or spend a few hundred and reach more people. This is the best time in history to be a creative. Besides technology making easier to expand our capabilities in our art we have the ability to share it with more people. Let's take advantage of our god-given talents. The world needs us. It might inspire somebody or even solve a problem for a person or community. I worked at one of the biggest record labels in the world. Now I work at one of the biggest advertising agencies in the world. Here are some of the differences I’ve observed so far: 1. Creativity is at the core of everything in advertising. As a junior, I’m being nurtured to create with intent and there’s an emphasis on developing my craft. At record labels, creativity comes second (after the numbers). There’s not as much need for nurturing employee creativity / craft because it’s almost always outsourced and commissioned elsewhere. 2. Money. Brands have money, artists / labels don’t (have as much). This has a huge effect on the creative. 3. Interestingly but unsurprisingly, at the record label, there were way more black employees on a ratio level. Labels often have dedicated ‘urban’ (i.e. black lol) music teams and there’s a clear focus on having people from those backgrounds speak to that that audience. I have an entire notes page with more observations, I just need time to watch them develop and prove true. Will be sharing in due course, in the meantime I wonder if agencies & labels will one day merge as a model? If you have 100 people spending money and supporting you, congratulations YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL. Please don't get caught up in chasing vanity metrics. It could be a distraction from doing what matters – building a genuine fan base. I'm not saying numbers are bad; we all want them, but most importantly, we want those numbers to mean something and produce the desired result. This is something I learn every day as I see artists with large followings struggle to sell 10 items, while under-the-radar artists are selling hundreds to thousands of exclusive merch, pieces of vinyl, and cassette tapes to an audience that appreciates their work. A follow up from a few days ago. Is this reckless or just clumsy? The amount of financial investment going into legacy archives is unprecedented. The largest investments in music, in the history of music is happening now. Archives matter. What what is done with them matter even more.
