In other car related, equally exciting news, Ford is planning to use olive trees to produce their components! The mix will be 40% olive tree fiber and 60% recycled plastic. The best part is that the olive tree materials they're using would otherwise just be waste. We love all upcycling, but this take is definitely the most innovative we've seen! The olive trees are already in the ground, doing what they do best: producing olives. But their pruning creates approximately 7 million tons of waste every year, according to Ford. Beyond the Finish Line: What Happens to Formula 1 Tires After the Race It was no surprise that Max Verstappen would clinch victory last Sunday, but do you ever wonder what becomes of those Formula 1 tires once the checkered flag waves? Once the tires have served their purpose on the track, they don't retire to a tire graveyard. Instead, they're transported to a #waste tire recycling facility. Here, specialized tire recycling equipment compresses them into containers. These containers then embark on a journey to a concrete factory in Oxfordshire, UK. There, the tires find a new purpose as an alternative to coal for powering the factory's kilns, which reach scorching temperatures of over 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. This process not only extends the tires' usefulness but also helps reduce the factory's #environmentalimpact While tire-derived fuel (TDF) currently serves as a solution, companies like Pirelli are actively researching more environmentally friendly alternatives. These include using recycled rubber powder in asphalt, creating rubber mats, artificial turfs, playground surfaces, and crafting plugs and hoses. While the vulcanization process makes it impossible to melt and reuse F1 tires in new tires, secondary recycling into various products can significantly extend their lifespan. So, the next time you watch an exhilarating Formula 1 race, remember that the tires, after their high-speed adventure, continue to play a role in powering other industries.
