This week’s Tradeoffs episode is more than a year in the making, and I’m so excited to finally get to share it with you. Last summer, I started talking with folks in cities that were doing something radical: sending unarmed mental health workers to respond to certain 911 calls. More than half of the country’s 50 largest cities now have what are often called alternative crisis response programs — many launched in just the last few years. I’d heard about these programs as I reported on our country’s mental health crisis, and I wanted to see for myself how they were working and if anywhere had a model that could help other cities design programs to improve care for people in a mental health crisis. Today, we bring you the first episode of The Fifth Branch, a special podcast series from Tradeoffs and The Marshall Project. The series zooms in on Durham, North Carolina’s HEART program, one of the most respected alternative crisis response programs in the country. Over the next three weeks, the series will lay out what I learned through months of reporting on the ground in Durham talking with city leaders, frontline responders, police officers, business owners and residents who have had HEART respond to their crisis. This week: How do you get skeptical cops on board with sending unarmed mental health workers to 911 calls? I hope you take the time to listen to this episode or read the transcript, and keep your ears out for the next episode on July 25 and the final episode on August 1. https://lnkd.in/e4VexDJS

Last April, Jennie Karnish MS, LPCC and Sara Livingston-Burke, LPCC joined our podcast episode to discuss the impact of #infertility on one's mental health, the stigma that exists, and how to support clients or loved ones struggling with infertility. Since it's #NationalInfertilityAwarenessWeek, I felt like it was important to re-share this episode in hopes that it helps some people feel less alone or better equipped to support others. If this is something that you're personally struggling with, I hope this conversation helps to normalize your feelings, and I hope that you feel care for and supported this week. https://lnkd.in/gHqZ6e2n
