This Pride Month we are celebrating LGBTQ+ leaders that helped shape the nonprofit sector. Our first featured leader is Pauli Murray, whose dedication to intersectional equity pushed the nonprofit sector to grow towards a more inclusive environment. Pauli Murray was an extraordinary individual whose contributions spanned multiple realms: a tireless civil rights activist, a co-founder of the National Organization for Women, and a legal scholar whose work profoundly influenced landmark cases such as Brown v. Board of Education. Let’s honor Pauli Murray by continuing to push boundaries, amplify diverse voices, and ensure that our missions reflect the inclusivity and justice they so passionately fought for. It's essential to address the issue of gatekeeping in funding allocation within organizations claiming to serve marginalized communities. The practice of using the "T" in LGBTQ to secure maximum funding for trans individuals, while not effectively supporting or serving them, is DIABOLICAL WORK. Many cisgender-led organizations prioritize funding over genuine service delivery to the trans community, even though local Trans-led organizations are actively engaged in providing essential support and services. This disparity highlights the need for transparency and accountability in resource allocation. As a Black Trans ED navigating funding opportunities, being aware of these challenges is crucial. Upholding integrity and ensuring that resources reach those who need them the most is key to fostering inclusivity and equity within the nonprofit sector. #FundingEquity #TransRights #NonprofitLeadership

Like many other Queer people my age and older, I can still remember when I saw the news about the tragic murder of Matthew Shepherd. As a young child in the midwest hearing that something like that could happen just 500 miles aways, was shocking. But it also made me to realize that the parts of me that I knew were different were things that could put me in danger. It took me 15 years to feel safe enough to even verbalize out loud who I truely am. I will never be silent again. Stories like Matthew Shepherd's are far too common in the news today. A resent study reported that LGBT people are nine times more likely than non-LGBT people to be the victims of violent hate crimes. The increase in hate crimes against Trans people specifically has gone up by 11% in just the past year, and by 186% in the last five years overall. I encourage you to actively support the LGBTQ+ communities in your area to strengthen the positive presence of Allies in the eyes of those that are feeling frightened and alone. Be the light. October 12th marks the passing of Matthew Shepard, and now, even 25 years later, many can still remember the horrible tragedy and the affect it had on the LGBTQ+ community. While great progress has been made since 1998, we still have work to do to protect the rights of all Arizonans and Americans. Sign the Unity Pledge to help us advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and public accommodations for LGBTQ+ individuals: UnityPledge.com In honor of today, consider learning more about the Matthew Shepard Foundation and making a donation. The organization empowers individuals to find their voice and create change. https://lnkd.in/dpeNqppG #MatthewShepard

Sometimes, LinkedIn feels like Facebook. I know this post may seem like I am dipping into that channel, but I believe it is important to share the following (professionally, that is) for those who read this and are concerned about the trajectory of K-12 history and social studies education. #lgbtq #historyunerased #ushistory #socialstudies #representationmatters https://lnkd.in/eutG7rY9

June marks Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities worldwide. The fact that we celebrate in June is not insignificant - it coincides with the date of the 1969 Stonewall riots, widely credited as the catalyst of the Queer Liberation movement. Many countries have made great strides towards LGBTQ+ equality - but this has not been a globally consistent, or linear, path. Many Queer people are still subject to immense discrimination and injustice, and many Governments have or are seeking to introduce legislation which will roll back some of the progress that has been made towards equality - including in some of OC&C’s geographies. It is for this reason that we commemorate Pride - to celebrate the progress we have made as a society, but also to raise awareness of the inequality and discrimination LGBTQ+ people face daily. At OC&C, we look forward to hearing from our colleagues and clients about their journeys as LGBTQ+ people, and fundraising for our charity partner Just Like Us as well as other charities.
