Notice something wonky in a CDR report? There’s a special place on the internet where you can query thousands of crashes to help you understand potential anomalies. NHTSA’s Crash Investigation Sampling System [CISS] has 15,000 crashes, including over 26,000 CDR reports, and you can download the native CDRx files when available to check out all the details. For instance, does the steering or delta-v polarity seem to be reversed? Search the CISS for vehicles in that model year range to see if there’s other data to support that theory. Trying to figure out what kind of damage a 10 mph delta-v underride generates? You might get help there too. The CDR reports are a bit buried so here is a screenshot below of how to navigate to them. Yesterday started #DistractedDrivingAwarenessMonth. If you didn't catch the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA's "Put the Phone Away or Pay" campaign kickoff, you missed something amazing. SADD Nation was represented well by student Alan Morales. Alan spoke from the heart of the importance of today's youth to set the example around #trafficsafety and how he and others do so through #SADD. Thank you, #NHTSA for giving Alan the platform to help launch the campaign. Fact: Drivers aged 15-20 make up 8 percent of drivers in fatal traffic crashes but are 9 percent of all distracted drivers and 11 percent of drivers distracted by cell phones in fatal crashes. Today's youth can change that statistic for the better and #SADDNation is a great place to start.
Today NHTSA's Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman spoke on the dangers of distracted driving and shared new 2022 distracted driving crash data at the "Put the Phone Away or Pay" campaign kickoff in Washington, DC. ⤵️

NHTSA's latest crash stats report https://lnkd.in/gs5N29_U predict a decline in traffic related deaths (both total and per mile driven) for 2023. I am hopeful this report encourages my colleagues in automotive safety to continue working hard and drive that number even lower. Yet, there were still ~41,000 deaths in the US last year. We still have work to do. One thing we can all do, right now: Put the Phone Away.

In 2021, the latest year for which statistics are available, nearly 13,400 people were killed in drunken driving crashes, costing society $280 billion in medical expenses, lost wages and loss of quality of life, the statement said. Alcohol-impaired crash deaths hit nearly a 15-year high in December 2021, with more than 1,000 people dying. NHTSA is doing something about this by passing the DADSS technology in vehicles. 75 miles (or much more) and many KGs of explosives at 1/5th the price of a new car in USA. How many of these can we buy, for the cost of 1x A-10 (or C-130, or pick an expensive legacy/old cold-war optimized system)?
