One day at work I came back to find someone had set my screen saver to this. The whole room had a good laugh at me. I had done similar to others. It was awesome. Let me tell you about security, team culture, and office humor.
The backdrop of this story is a time in my career I found myself working on a NASA contract where our work was flagged as "No Foreign." Meaning, only US citizens were allowed to see what we were doing. To ensure this, we were required to lock our screens any time we left out computers unattended.
Naturally, we'd forget. We're human, after all. Our office was filled with jokers and we still had the luxury of cubicles to give some level of privacy. You know, the kind of privacy that could hide a coworker messing with your computer when you weren't looking?
Cue some benevolent pranks.
Did you leave to discuss that algorithms interface at another cube? Care bear background for you!
Go to the bathroom for 5 minutes? Screen shot of your desktop before all the shortcuts were moved to a folder. "Why wasn't the mouse click working!?"
Giant eyeball for a mouse pointer? Bet you were just in a meeting...
The pranks never got out of control; no one did anything malicious; and every image was kept G rated. Of course, if someone said they'd had enough we left them alone. For them, we locked their screen and moved on.
All of this led to a safer, more secure office. Who would have thought a team could find a way to bond over "security?" Fun times.
