Ever heard of Biophilic design? I knew the concept but had no idea what it was called. It is building design that increases connection to the environment of those living/working there. Think green roofs, designs that imitate natural patterns. You could even argue the hanging gardens of Babylon are some of the first biophilic designs. These designs mean: 🌿employees take fewer sick days, 🌱patients spend less time in hospital, 🌳kids learn better in schools In a week where the news has been about crumbling concrete, sick buildings, the growing issue of sickness and work, and nutrient neutrality in the housing sector, we need more of this. #sustainability #systemsdesign #biophilicdesign #peopleexperience https://lnkd.in/eq5ZGDqg

It's a philosophy, a conscious effort to reconnect us with the natural world within the built environment. And it turns out, this connection isn't just heartwarming; it's smart. 🥩🥩 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭?🥩🥩 Studies show that biophilic design can: 💡Boost employee productivity and well-being by reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive function. 💪🧠😌 💡Optimize energy efficiency by utilizing natural light and ventilation, minimizing reliance on artificial systems. ☀️🍃💰 💡Create a more resilient, adaptable environment through biomimicry principles (think self-regulating temperature and air quality). 🌪️🌱 🥩🥩🥩𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞?🥩🥩🥩 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒃𝒊𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: ✔ Living walls and vertical gardens: These vibrant green tapestries not only purify the air but also provide natural insulation and sound absorption. 🌿👂 ✔Biomimicry-inspired structures: From buildings shaped like trees to roofs mimicking butterfly wings, nature's ingenious forms are being used to create energy-efficient wonders. 🦋🌳 ✔Natural materials: Wood, stone, and other organic materials bring warmth, texture, and a sense of connection to the outdoors. 🪵🪨 ✔Water features: The gentle sound of trickling water or a calming reflection pool can do wonders for stress reduction and biophilic ambience. 💧🌊 ✔Maximizing natural light: Skylights, strategically placed windows, and open floor plans bathe spaces in sunlight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. ☀️💡 ✔Connecting with nature views: Whether it's a park, a garden, or even a bustling city street, exterior vistas offer a sense of peace and connection to the wider world. 🌳🏙️ These are just a few examples of how biophilic design is transforming the way we build. It's not just a trend; it's a paradigm shift, a conscious choice to create spaces that nurture both our planet and our well-being. #BiophilicDesign #SustainableConstruction #NatureInspiredBuildings

MSc INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE MSA + MSc ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING DESIGN | Student Member of the IALD | Women in Lighting
Yesterday evening, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a seminar organized by the Annell Ljus + Form AB , and a professor from Jönköping University, Johan Röklander in Malmö. We delved deep into the fascinating realm of how our brains work in conjunction with light, and specifically the intricate connections between light and our taste buds - our perception of salt levels, various aromas in a piece of chocolate. MIND BLOWING! 🤯🍫 This topic has always captivated my interest, to the point where I find myself pondering these concepts even in the quiet hours of the night. 😴😱🤩💡 Exploring the profound impact of different light sources on the color composition of fabrics, and observing their unique reactions with specific hues, was truly eye-opening. In my opinion, every interior architect should experience these insights. Understanding the interplay of light and human senses not only transforms our perspective but also enables us to appreciate the underestimated yet crucial element of lighting. This newfound awareness is invaluable on our journey to creating more human-oriented spaces. 🪄 Even though my master thesis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology provided me with a foundation on how light impacts our non-visual experiences, I am driven to dive even deeper into the realm of possibilities. I am passionate about discovering innovative ways to enhance the human experience in various environments, be it homes, offices, or hospitality spaces. Together, let's continue exploring the uncharted territories of lighting and sensory design, shaping spaces that truly resonate with people. 🌟🌟 FUN FACT: I might have broken a personal record with the amount of chocolate I consumed yesterday – I blame it on the enlightening seminar! 🍫😄 #chocholateoverload Photo credits: Annell Ljus + Form AB #sensorydesign #humanexperience #innovationindesign #lightingdesign #neuroscience #interiorarchitecture #humansenses #offices #hospitality #homes #interiordesign

Biophilic design?! What on earth.. literally?! 😀😀 Well, as it turns out.. Biophilic Design is an innovative way to improve our living and working environments by integrating natural elements that cater to our innate love for nature. This approach goes beyond mere aesthetics, focusing on creating spaces that stimulate all our senses - sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste - for a truly immersive experience. By incorporating aspects like natural light, natural materials like wood and stone, and natural patterns, biophilic design offers a multitude of benefits, including enhanced well-being and productivity, sustainability, increased real estate value, and more. Research has shown that biophilic design can significantly improve productivity and well-being, with offices that embrace biophilic elements reporting an 8% increase in productivity and a 13% improvement in well-being. SO, it's not just about adding a plant here and there; it's about creating a balance between urban and natural elements to achieve harmony and a tranquil, healthier living space. I think we could all benefit from that.. For homes in the Inland Empire, integrating biophilic design principles can offer a unique selling proposition, appealing to buyers and tenants looking for spaces that promote health, happiness, and a deeper connection to nature. Whether it's through maximizing natural light, incorporating vegetation in creative ways, or using materials and patterns that evoke the natural world, there are numerous ways to implement biophilic design in properties to attract a wider audience. To learn more about biophilic design and how it's transforming spaces in 2024, I recommend looking at the detailed resources and guides available at Sustainable Wave and Koider, which offer detailed insights into the principles, benefits, and practical applications of biophilic design in real estate and beyond. #anathigpen #biophilicdesign #inlandempirerealtor

It is time for a new paradigm to emerge. "...the fundamental paradox of contemporary design — that in an attempt to make our environment more and more comfortable, we have destroyed that environment itself." Now, it is time that our building environs for human habitation result in a positive impact on the health of the natural systems that sustain life itself. . https://lnkd.in/gb6DZ6qD #climatecrisis #communitywellbeing #WellbingByDesign #design
