Yay! The Daily Sentinel, Colorado’s 7th largest newspaper, published my letter in today’s print edition about a few conflicting bills moving through our state legislature that I’ve been tracking. Last month Denver Post ran one of my letters and now this one, so yes, feeling a wee bit of hope in getting heard. It’s not much, but we take ‘em where we can get ‘em!
The photo of the crumpled paper is hard to read, so here is the full text:
Hypocrisy Rules State Government
The Colorado Attorney General has asked the taxpayers via our elected representatives to give his office $150,000 to be the disinformation czar with Colorado Senate Bill 24-084, while his and the governor’s Working Group to Transform Criminal & Juvenile Justice, a policy monopoly, removed the words “truth” and “responsibility” from their stated duties (March 7) with the intention of the commission being made permanent in law (currrently in draft bill stage), complete with taxpayer paid staff.
Yet, We the People, must “swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help us GOD.’
The government wants to be the disinformation police for the public while they themselves are exempt from truth and responsibility? Um, no. If it looks and sounds like a caste system, it is quite likely a caste system.
But wait, there’s more.
Cigar festivals are now included as an amendment to HB24-1156, a bill intended to promote “wine walk festivals,” while SB24-022 gives authority to local districts to ban the sales of menthol cigarettes, flavored chew tobacco and vapes.
Our state is exempting and enshrining cigars and cigar festivals while allowing for the ban of flavored tobaccos and vapes. More caste classifications. Cigars are elite and exempt, while the others are criminalized.
It is not difficult to see why they don’t want us poking around their their Open Meetings Laws SB24-157, which they tightened up and moved throught the legislative process like it was on rails, already signed by the governor.
Their privileges and exemptions are part of the caste system playbook, baked into our infrastructures like hot apple pie. And they wonder why so many people are upset and don’t “trust” them. Maybe it is the hypocrisy, elitism and caste-ing without explanation or reconciliation of conflicting legislation that so many affected citizens are tired of?
