EV Maritime, a New Zealand-based marine technology company, will share its vision for a zero-emissions future for Australian ferries at the Interferry conference in Hobart, Tasmania this week.
EV Maritime CEO Michael Eaglen will speak on the zero-emissions ferry transition underway in Auckland, where the company is delivering the world's first fully electric, 200-passenger fast ferries. Mr Eaglen will share unique insights into the opportunities and urgency for other world cities to decarbonise their urban maritime public transport systems with electric ferries.
Smart Energy Council is excited to see EV Maritime and other New Zealand companies leading the way in the global transition to electric ferries. We encourage all ferry operators, government officials, and other stakeholders interested in decarbonizing the inshore maritime sector to attend Mr Eaglen's speech at Interferry 2023.

MovingDot delivers assessment framework for noise abatement to CRO Rotterdam 🔊🛬
At the request of the Regional Consultation Committee (CRO) of Rotterdam The Hague Airport, we have developed an “Assessment Framework” aimed at improving the evaluation of noise nuisance mitigation measures, which has now been formally adopted in the committee’s working methods and procedures.
The ways possible measures work and the resulting nuisance-reducing effects are very diverse, moreso as people may perceive nuisance differently. An assessment framework is therefore bound to “compare apples to oranges”, or in other words, it aims to be a multi-criteria analysis tool with which a choice for or against a noise abatement measure can be substantiated and explained.
In an airport’s path towards environmentally friendly operations, #noiseabatement is a key component in ensuring a sustainable coexistence between the rising demand of air transportation and local communities.

Watch now: Boston Water Transportation Webinar
Affordable, convenient, frequent water transportation is crucial to the mission of Boston Harbor Now and our partners to make our beautiful, historic Harbor Islands accessible to everyone from throughout Greater Boston. I was delighted to join a panel discussion last week exploring a wide range of water transportation topics, sponsored by A Better City and the and Lower Mystic Transportation Management Association. It was a rich and lively conversation with Bob Lawler of Boston Harbor City Cruises and David Perry, the MBTA's first-ever Director of Commuter Ferry Services, a critically important position we were thrilled to see the T create back in April, with lots of incisive questions from our audience.
I highly recommend viewing the recorded discussion and was particularly pleased that we got to focus on:
- the key role that recreational ferry services play in making all-day and commuter ferry services work financially and operationally, such as service between Boston and Salem that’s proven to be a terrific option for both commuters and tourists
- why we dearly need to invest in upgraded “back of the house” ferry facilities for vessel support and maintenance on Boston’s waterfront, so we don’t have to send ferries as far away as ports in Gloucester or Fairhaven for more than routine service and repairs and can accommodate ferry service expansions
- and next year’s planned opening of a new ferry terminal at Pier 10 in the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park will provide improved mass transit options for reaching this busy and growing part of our waterfront.
Something we touched on briefly that I hope transportation and environmental advocates will make a bigger part of the conversation going forward: The need for us to deploy “green” ferries that run on renewable fuels and/or batteries charged up by clean electricity. Water transportation is already one of the most flexible forms of transportation in the face of climate change for moving people and goods around the harbor and world. Widespread deployment of green ferries will make the case even more compelling for expanding water transportation options, destinations, and frequencies.
My deep thanks to ABC, STMA, and LMTMA, and moderator Scott Mullen of ABC for putting on a superb, timely event and inviting Boston Harbor Now to be part of it. You can find the recording at https://lnkd.in/guk_4AWv#watertransportation#urbanplanning#bostonharbor#publictransit#boston
Did you know that San Francisco’s public transport system is now almost entirely electric? Did you know the water that surrounds the city hosts the world’s first emissions-free ferries?
Not to mention the city has some of the oldest electric public transportation in the world, going back to the 19th century!
The electrification of public transport has become central to global climate policy. However, disparities remain among cities worldwide in transitioning to electric fleets due to upfront costs and policy challenges.
There are a lot of lessons that can be taken from San Francisco that extend beyond sustainability; they underscore the value of repurposing and adapting existing infrastructure to build clean and reliable public transport networks that earn high satisfaction among residents.
