"If a picture is worth 1000 words, a prototype is worth 1000 meetings." - David & Tom Kelley, IDEO I have learnt from experience that a meeting gets so much useful if you bring a prototype for the client's requirements, they mentioned in the meeting before. Most humans by nature are visual learners. It does not have to be cleanest proto.. can be a sketch or digital one... I even had quick prototyped a form in Excel ... Just it should convey what you want it to. So, designers do not be scared of bringing your rough sketches to meetings to take input... be confident and open to feedback! **Design Operations Tip!** Every designers has to present its work sometime, somewhere, somehow. You get into the meeting and a Figma file is opened. And the screen goes EVERYWHERE. While the designer is walking through the prototype he switches back and forth, up and down, left and right to quickly show as much as possible. Then the whole room throws up because they became sea sick 🤢. No, i’m not going to give you presentation tips now. But an insight on how we improved this skill in a fun way! Last year we took a 3 month period with the team to focus on improving our presentation skills. As a base we used the Ted talks by David JP Phillips. We then challenged each other on creating a presentation & story about Donuts while applying his insights and then scoring each other. When I started👴 at Aegon, Design was an external discipline. The organisation knew it needed it but was not yet sure if it was something to seriously invest in and therefor stayed at the use of external contractors. My first maturity challenge was to open up the transparency of our design operations. I focused on a few core questions: - What exactly are we doing? - Why are we doing it? - What does it cost the organisation? - What does it bring the organisation? - Who needs to know what? Based on these 5 questions we changed up our infrastructure with the goal to become more transparant. Moving away from sketch and adopting Figma for it’s easy SSO access and file visibility. No more PDF’s, no more PowerPoints, no more word. Everything we do is now in a figma file and can be viewed by anyone in the organisation. As a result we moved Figma away from ‘just a design tool’ towards a company wide adopted application for collaboration. Effectively opening up our discipline to stakeholders beyond our reach and increasing our visibility. Since 2021, I’ve been leveraging the power of Notion, first discovering it during a hackathon. As a tool, Notion has been central to my career journey as a designer, from tracking personal development to designing the portfolio. Here’s how I am using it: 💼 Strategic work documentation: Using Notion more than just taking simple notes, I created a ‘career book’ for myself in which I analyzed daily successes, and setbacks, extracted lessons, and refined my approach to challenges. It’s a living document that recorded my career evolution. 🔍 Job search: Currently, I'm utilizing Notion extensively for my job hunt. Stay tuned for a detailed post on this! 🎨 Rapid portfolio: No-code tools like Framer and Webflow are amazing for creating portfolio websites but if you have limited time this tool is a great tool to organize your design work and share. Its integration capabilities, like embedding Figma files, make it a powerful platform for showcasing design work. 😌 Personal development manager: Beyond professional use, I use it as my go-to for managing my personal growth.
