Louis Sullivan (1856-1924), an American architect and a pivotal figure in the Chicago School of Architecture, is renowned for his phrase "form follows function." This concept, a cornerstone of modern design, emphasizes that a building's shape should primarily be guided by its intended purpose rather than ornamental details or historical styles. Sullivan drew inspiration from the natural world, observing a direct correlation between form and function in living organisms. He noted how a bird's wing is expertly shaped for flight and how a tree's trunk robustly supports its foliage. Sullivan advocated for this organic principle in architecture, arguing that a building's design should be inherently linked to its functionality. This philosophy profoundly influenced the trajectory of modern architecture. Iconic architects of the 20th century, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruce Goff, Walter Gropius, and Le Corbusier, integrated Sullivan's tenets into their work. They crafted buildings that were functional and aesthetically engaging, showcasing how Sullivan's visionary approach reshaped modern architectural thought and practice. #AirSea #AirSeaPacking #LouisSullivan #chicagoschool #formfollowsfunction #modernarchitecture #architecturalphilosophy #functionaldesign #sullivaninfluence #architecturalinnovation #natureinspireddesign #architecturalrevolution #louissullivanlegacy #architecturalpioneers #designprinciples #aestheticfunctionality #architecturalmasters #franklloydwright #waltergropius #lecorbusier #sullivanandwright #architecturalevolution #innovativebuilders #designingwithpurpose #sullivanphilosophy

Addressing the construction industry's climate impact isn't a simple task; there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Swapping concrete for timber won't be the savior in every case. However, it's not an either-or scenario. Timber, a more sustainable alternative to many conventional building materials, offers aesthetics and practicality. As a light-weight material, it's especially applicable in the transformation of our existing building mass. In April, @Chicago Architecture Center unveiled their current exhibition: ”Reframed: The Future of Cities in Wood," featuring @shl's model of a post-industrial silo. Our proposal seeks to reactivate it within the urban landscape. The silo remains intact, but with a new timber structure on top, it becomes a functional centerpiece, bridging the past with the present while also offering an identity in a new urban development. Looking forward to joining the "Talking Timber" panel discussion hosted by @Chicago Architecture Center this Tuesday. We'll delve into timber's role in future construction, exploring its potential and challenges. Excited to exchange insights on AND gain new knowledge about timber's future! #TimberConstruction #TimberInnovation #TimberTalks #Reframed #TimberArchitecture #shl #schmidthammerlassen https://lnkd.in/et7DmiNd

I used to fantasize about how we as architects & designers can bring forth ideas to transform the fabric of the Slums / LIG Housing. How proposing Wall murals & Art can make a difference ? I attempted generating possible outcomes using MidJourney. #artforchange #midjourney #slum

Some abstract angles and compositions shot at Delft TU Library that display the structures integration and reflection of both the sky and surrounding vegetation. I just love this building, and weirdly enough found myself drawn to the road facing facades rather than the grassed roof and conical tower. #architecturalphotography #architectuur #architecture #architectuurfotografie

💭 I.M. Pei captures the essence of architecture—it's a mirror of life! 🌟 When we look at buildings, we journey through time, feeling the echoes of the past and the soul of a place. Architectural structures embody society's values, beliefs, and dreams, preserving history while embracing the present. 🌆 📜 Through design, buildings tell captivating stories, showcasing the evolution of civilization and our cultural heritage. #ArchitectureReflection #IMPeiQuotes #BuildingNarratives

In-between-spaces (especially setbacks between tall buildings) are usually given less priority or even dismissed when it comes to appreciating architecture. Framing a ‘volume’ created as a result of this seperation is no doubt ‘virtual’ but in essence this sense of place is never obvious to the undiscerning eye. What one looks at or look for can never be generally anticipated. However, this is usually its beauty and significance. With interesting architectural forms and planes in sequence, coupled with the intervention of greens and layers carefully punctuated, it reveals a vision that can be truly quite fascinating. ❤️ #inbetweenspaces #tallbuildings #architecturalphotography

Is there a growing movement towards traditional architecture? What is the appeal? There's an appeal in traditional as it reflects the story of the times, the culture of the people and a physical history of our social evolution. The buildings of the past were a manifestation of the people's values, the physical representation the surrounding environment and materials, the local culture, the magesty they wanted to express, socialising etc. A bottom up approach. I'm contrast now with the intellectual pursuit of global visions, modern architecture is often a top down approach where the story is written by those in power. Is community created organically, or by dictate. Why is it that so many still desire the character of the past, rather than the comfort of now. Life is a continuous story. Architecture represents our story. What are we saying and what is it we really want to say. #architecture #buildings #community #traditionalarchitecture #society #history #local #tradition #culture https://lnkd.in/gckQiUZV

Did you know that wood is the world’s only naturally-renewable mainstream building material? Although it has been used throughout human history, it is only recently that the world's best architects are experimenting with new structures, patterns and manufacturing techniques in this material. #funfacts #didyouknow #deckdesign #patiocover #deckbuilding #compositedecking #deckingspecialist #HometownDecking #wooddecks
