SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM | Jimmie Hamilton pauses for a quick smile during his Osage Nation Summer Youth Employment job at Miears Tire Shop. Located in Hominy, Miears Tire Shop is one of many businesses hosting Osage summer youth workers who receive on-the-job training to support their professional development. Hamilton graduated from Hominy High School in 2023 and went on to complete certification in Electrical Trades at Central Tech in Drumright. This is Hamilton’s second time participating in the Osage Nation Summer Youth Employment. “This program gave me direction in my career training related to electrical trades,” says Hamilton. “My certification will help get me closer to becoming a professional journeyman.” The Osage Nation Summer Youth Employment Program helps Native American youth ages 16 to 21 gain work experience and become more marketable in different fields. The program benefits both the young individuals and the businesses they work with, promoting economic and social development. Participants are paid through the Financial Assistance Department. Meet our first pre-conference presenter, Miranda James! Read more about their session through the link in our bio. Centering Student Learning in Campus Jobs This session is a case study of how the Multicultural Center (MCC) at Clackamas Community College is hiring, onboarding, and offboarding student employees differently. Whether you have student workers with very specific job responsibilities, or more ambiguous job responsibilities, this session is for you! In summer 2023 I wanted to change up how I recruited and hired student employees, and find ways for more buy-in from the students and their work. After re-centering the MCC’s mission statement, I created a process for hiring, onboarding, and evaluating students that is mission driven and co-created with students. Specifically this session will cover: 1. How to identify actionable pieces of your department’s mission statement 2. Building individual position descriptions with students 3. Using that position description as their roadmap for work, that in turn becomes their evaluation.

In recognition of School Social Worker Week, let's explore the path to becoming a social worker and delineate the distinctions between a School Social Worker and a School Counselor Have you ever considered the path to becoming a social worker? Prospective school social workers are typically required to attain both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in social work, supplemented by a school internship experience. It's important to note that specific requirements may vary from state to state. Do you know what distinguishes a school counselor from a school social worker? Understanding the distinction between a school social worker and a school counselor is vital. While school counselors primarily aid students in achieving academic goals through individual or group counseling sessions, school social workers specialize in providing individualized support to students for improved academic and social performance. #NationalSchoolSocialWorkWeek #SSWWeek2024 #MaximStaffing #SchoolStaffing #SchoolJobs #EducationServices
