In Colorado, when and how police bodycam footage is released depends on the department. The article highlights the lack of uniformity in how Colorado police departments handle the release of body camera footage following officer-involved shootings. While there's a state law mandating footage release for misconduct complaints, no such requirement exists for shootings themselves. Key points: Departmental discretion: Each department has its own policies on footage release, leading to varying levels of transparency. Balancing act: Police departments face the challenge of balancing public interest with the integrity of ongoing investigations and respect for involved parties. Public pressure: Increased public scrutiny, particularly following incidents like the Elijah McClain case, has led to some departments adopting more transparent practices. Law enforcement integrity act: This law mandates footage release for misconduct complaints but has loopholes that can be exploited. Lawsuits: Some media outlets and families have filed lawsuits to compel footage release. Overall, the article emphasizes the need for clearer statewide guidelines on bodycam footage release to ensure greater transparency and accountability in police shootings. As investigators this is a continuing challenge. https://lnkd.in/gJeyqDus #BodyCameraFootage #PoliceBodyCam #InvestigationServices #TrailfinderInc

New Post: ‘Freedom Convoy’ trial to hear from Ottawa police on second day OTTAWA - A court in Ottawa is expected to hear from additional members of city's police service today on the second day of the trial of two key 'Freedom Convoy' organizers. The 16-day hearing began Tuesday with a Crown prosecutor presenting the case against Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, who are jointly charged with mischief, counselling others to commit mischief, intimidation and obstructing police. Prosecutor Tim Radcliffe told the court in his opening statement that the pair's political views against COVID-19 health orders are not on trial, but rather the means by which they tried to bring those orders to an end. The court viewed a 12-minute video compilation of footage shot by police body cameras as well as drones that captured the honking and atmosphere as hundreds of protesters blocked downtown Ottawa streets for three weeks in the winter of 2022. It was the first of many videos the Crown anticipates showing in court including some videos taken by Lich and Barber themselves. Lawyers for both Lich and Barber took issue during the first day of trial with the Crown's use of the term "occupation" to characterize the protest, saying it was not only inaccurate but insensitive to people past and present who have under lived occupied control. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept.5, 2023. David Shawn
