The FCC’s war on robocalls has gained a new weapon in its arsenal with the declaration of AI-generated voices as “artificial” and therefore definitely against the law when used in automated calling scams. It may not stop the flood of fake Joe Bidens that will almost certainly trouble our phones this election season, but it won’t hurt, either. The new rule, contemplated for months and telegraphed last week, isn’t actually a new rule — the FCC can’t just invent them with no due process. Robocalls are just a new term for something largely already prohibited under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act: artificial and pre-recorded messages being sent out willy-nilly to every number in the phone book (something that still existed when they drafted the law). The question was whether an AI-cloned voice speaking a script falls under those proscribed categories. It may seem obvious to you, but nothing is obvious to the federal government by design (and sometimes for other reasons), and the FCC needed to look into it and solicit expert opinion on whether AI-generated voice calls should be outlawed. https://lnkd.in/gDFJMqU3

I imagine we’ll see similar restrictions limiting the ability of LLMs/Chatbots/AI Agents that deliver sales content and solicitation communications by means of SMS/MMS text messaging. For businesses leveraging AI technologies, prioritizing transparency is essential. Ensure your clients understand when they are interacting with AI-driven services rather than human personnel. Furthermore, it's imperative to offer a straightforward mechanism for clients to contact a live representative at any moment. Embracing transparency and accessibility in technology deployment underscores your commitment to ethical practices and client satisfaction. #AI #innovation #responsibleai #sales #transparency

FCC Votes To Outlaw Scam Robocalls That Use AI-Generated Voices: The Federal Communications Commission said Thursday it is immediately outlawing scam robocalls featuring fake, artificial intelligence-created voices, cracking down on so-called "deepfake" technology that experts say could undermine election security or supercharge fraud. From a report: The unanimous FCC vote extends anti-robocall rules to cover AI deepfake calls by recognizing those voices as "artificial" under a federal law governing telemarketing and robocalling. The FCC's move gives state attorneys general more legal tools to pursue illegal robocallers that use AI-generated voices to impersonate celebrities, politicians and close family members, the FCC said. The FCC is targeting organizations that utilize AI-generated voices in robocalls. This very little that makes me as frustrated as spam calls. Layering in AI-generated voices is enough to make me throw my phone in a river and migrate back to carrier pigeons and snail mail. AI-generated voice robocalls are problematic, because 1) they scam families out of cash by pretending to be a family member 2) it's prevalent in voter fraud cases 3) sales organizations use these tactics, such as masquerading as a celebrity, to trick you into buying their product. Cheers to the FCC for taking a steps towards resolving this! #robocalls #aichallenges #artificialintelligence #fcc
