This successful acquisition of Nasuni contains a few valuable lessons, among them: (1) secular trends or innovation waves have long arcs. My partner Chip Hazard identified the power of the cloud as a major opportunity (see MongoDB) and has played that trend out over 15 years (and we are still playing it out). Imagine now how long the Age of AI is going to last; (2) the combination of brilliant tech vision and great commercial execution is a potent one. Paul Flanagan was a master in partnering with Andres Rodriguez to build an enduring, profitable, valuable company; and (3) the rise of PE firms as a force in the tech industry is underappreciated and just getting started. Vista Equity Partners and others like them are showing that efficient capital markets abhor a vacuum, such as the one created by the clogged public markets. Earlier this year, South African ICT company Datacentrix announced that Convergence Partners, through its Convergence Partners Digital Infrastructure Fund, alongside the existing Datacentrix management team, entered into a definitive agreement with Alviva Holdings to acquire 100% of Datacentrix. The agreement was subject to the fulfilment of conditions and regulatory approval. Datacentrix has now announced that all conditions precedent have been met. Andile Ngcaba, chairman of Convergence Partners added, “We are excited to embark on this journey towards artificial intelligence with Datacentrix. 📉 Here's how Fusionex went from $106M to $0 (a stunning fall in Malaysia's tech history): 🚀 The Rise of Fusionex Fusionex, founded by Malaysian entrepreneur Ivan Teh in 2005, provided innovative data analytics solutions for global clients, including Micron, Ford, Aviva, HP, and AirAsia. Back then, data infrastructure, AI, and big data were still very new to many enterprises, hence Fusionex’s solutions were high in market demand. Fusionex became a Malaysian overnight success story when it listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in December 2012 and raised RM500 million in 2013 when its IPO was oversubscribed by more than 3 times. However, in 2017, Fusionex decided to delist from LSE and take it private. Despite delisting, Fusionex’s growing fame and positive press attracted Hitachi’s attention as the Japanese conglomerate wanted to venture into AI and big data. Guess what? In 2020, Hitachi acquired Fusionex for RM545 million 💰 📉 The Fall of Fusionex While it might seem that Hitachi’s acquisition was a happy ending for Fusionex and Ivan, the marriage didn’t last long due to a lack of transparency and mismanagement. Here's what happened 👇🏻 • March 2023 — Ivan and his team didn't comply with Hitachi's request to conduct internal audits on Fusionex. • October 2023 — Fusionex said they would need to retrench staff as part of its cost-cutting measures. • November 2023 — Ivan proposed an immediate capital injection (up to USD150 million) from Hitachi. • December 2023 — Fusionex told its staff (over 500 employees) they’ll be retrenched and the company will be liquidated. Besides, Hitachi also found a number of suspicious transactions (huge volume) that were used to pay as “software development costs“ and “technology fees” provided by V-Circle and Convedge. — So what will happen to Ivan and his senior leadership team? We’re not sure yet as Fusionex’s liquidators will determine if Hitachi should pursue legal action against them.
