Engineers are most likely to turnover 1-5 years into their career. It's almost always preventable. Junior engineers: - Gain skills rapidly - Take on more responsibility - Get promoted every 12-24 months If you're taking on more, it's natural to want a bigger salary or promotion. A lot of the time leaving for a new job feels like the right solution. Impact on the business doesn't always line up with the annual salary review and promotion cycle. On the other hand, the engineers I work with who earn the most: - Are with their companies 5+ years - Have open dialogue with their bosses about long-term goals - Have institutional knowledge of their companies built over years When your value becomes hard to replace - bigger roles, titles, and salary are quick to follow. But if you're a junior engineer who hasn't been-there done-that, the path to get from A to B isn't so clear. Or there wouldn't be so many wondering if the grass is greener at other companies. It's worth a deeper dive to see if conversations are happening with juniors about their goals and what they need to do to reach them. It's the best hack I've seen for reducing turnover.

Levels.fyi just released a report of 2023. The most interesting data: 1. Min and median salaries decrease for software engineers in 2023 2. However, P75 and max salaries had an increase 3. Most European cities offer up to 50% of the salary that you'd earn in the Bay Area It's easy to feel underpaid if you compare your salary with an engineer in the US. While I wish I had a US salary, this doesn't mean I'm underpaid in my local market. To know the salaries around me, I have checked sites like Glassdoor and Levels.fyi. Check the report here: https://lnkd.in/dgFSUis7 #softwareengineering #salaries --- 👉 I also have a newsletter, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/dgATcCt5

When I first heard about it, prompt engineering was a mystery to me. I thought the trend would die off with a few cheat sheets. But I keep seeing companies advertising six-figure salaries for prompt engineers, which got me thinking that we should probably start learning more about it... While I can’t offer you a six-figure salary, I can offer you six prompts to help with daily testing efforts (see the carousel below). If you can think of any better ones, or have experience with creating prompts for software engineering, please let me know in the comments — I’m curious. #PromptEngineering #QualityAssurance

Skills are abilities trained and directed toward specific tasks. Organizations must hire the proper abilities, which are more stable and inherent, in order to have employees who can be trained for required tasks. This article is trying to clarify the need to move away fro generalizations (degrees) and hire ability (critical thinking) and values (professionalism) but the writer confuses the ideas they wish to advance. Time mgt is a trainable skill like financial mgt but may involve certain stable traits to be present in the person hired. Tgis article is a good direction to go but more clarity on what qualities you hire and what you can train is needed and not included in this article. https://lnkd.in/gkFGXact
Most companies have turned to skills-based hiring, but there’s a big problem: Workers are missing 3 key skills they’re looking for — FORTUNE

What is reputation in software engineering? I think this topic is not as widely discussed as it should be. For me, it is a combination of producing high quality meaningful work, but also being able to "sell it" well. The classic engineer trap is to focus only on technicalities, knowing the niche features of a language while not promoting your work, both inside and outside your company, effectively underselling your skills. I would say this is 90% hard work / 10% marketing. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the "fake it till you make it" Elizabeth Holmes mentality, in which you oversell your work by a lot and hope that no one finds out that it is not as meaningful as you are saying it to be. I would say this is 10% hard work / 90% marketing. I don't think it is right to condemn the second approach; in my opinion, they are both quite bad. We literally live off of our reputation. It is what gets us jobs, clients, and ultimately impacts the amount of money we make. During an interview, your skills are equally as important as your ability to negotiate salary. So, what is the best ratio? 50/50? Again, I am torn on this. The most famous (or the highest-paid) engineers are rarely the ones who *deserve* it the most, and you cannot really blame someone for trying to get the most out of their skills. Until it is too much. When is it too much, though? Is one more important than the other, or are they equally important? Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to that (let me know if you do!), but still, the aggregate of the two is really what defines our overall reputation hence our career. What is your personal take on this? Are you more on the conservative side, hoping someone will notice you (notice me senpai!) and reward you accordingly, or are you more aggressive (yolo), maybe risking going a bit too far on self promotion? 😉

Hello everyone, I recently had an unsettling experience with a company's document retention policy that has prompted me to raise a concern. I received an offer from a company as Software Engineer that required me to sign a 2.5-year bond and hand over my original documents for the same period. While the offer came with an attractive salary, I couldn't overlook the fact that this practice raises questions about the company's management and work environment. I firmly believe that holding original documents for such a long period is not a standard practice in reputable companies. It not only undermines the trust between the employer and employee but also indicates potential issues within the organization that may lead to high turnover rates. Do you think they are justified, or do they raise concerns about the company's credibility and work culture? #companypolicy
