Despite the moral perspective to align investments with the sustainable development goals, current UK pension funds allocations into Africa remain minimal, prompting discussions on why and how this can change. This blog reflects on a Pensions for Purpose roundtable, co-organised with the UK charity Shell Foundation and the US Government’s Prosper Africa initiative on the challenges of unlocking institutional capital for investing in emerging markets for positive impact. #BlendedFinance #EmergingMarkets #PensionsforPurpose https://ow.ly/QWlX50Rlk1y

📈 The UK has an expert community of investors ready to work with pension funds to ensure everyone saving for their retirement benefits from a diversified portfolio of high-quality private companies with growth potential. The #VCCompact is an important signal of their commitment to working collaboratively with pension funds, government and the UK’s innovative industries to overcome the remaining barriers that will unlock up to £50 billion of new investment. There are many more expert investors beyond the initial signatories of the VC Compact, and I look forward to more of them joining and working with us to really move the dial for pension savers and innovative young businesses alike. - Dr Dan Mahony, the UK Government’s Life Sciences Investment Envoy British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA) #PensionFunds #UKInvestors #InnovativeIndustries

Surely we need more green companies ring fenced for investment. Assets moved from carbon emitters that have no carbon reduction plan. Pity emitters are not targeted by short positions/hedge funds. As many as 13 million largely lower-paid workers in Britain will start having some of their pension savings channelled into a fund focused on renewable energy, biodiversity and solving social issues. The National Employment Savings Trust (Nest), the £36 billion state-backed default pension fund, has hired the Swiss private bank, Lombard Odier, to manage a new sub-fund that will attempt to eke out higher returns by focusing on seismic macro themes such as climate change. Workers will have about 5 per cent of their total pension contributions put into the new fund, which Nest estimates will grow to £5 billion by 2030
