Don't worry about genius: Sir Frederick Treves, the pioneering British surgeon who saved the life of Edward VII with a radical and untested procedure to drain the appendix, wrote this below snippet which features in the Dangerous Book for Boys by Hal and Conn Iggulden. Something I read frequently as a reminder that through continued effort we can influence our own futures. "Don’t worry about genius and don’t worry about not being clever. Trust rather to hard work, perseverance, and determination. The best motto for a long march is ‘Don’t grumble. Plug on.’ You hold your future in your own hands. Never waver in this belief. Each cycle of 365 days marks the sacred occasion of my Natal day, prompting a ritual of self-retrospection and introspection. On this day, I am reminded of the profound wisdom of my academic mentor, Socrates, who declared, "An unexamined life is not worth living." Acknowledging mistakes is inherent to our humanity, yet our character is truly revealed by our willingness to confront and learn from them. In the tapestry of our existence, errors are inevitable; however, embracing a culture of humility entails admitting our missteps, extracting lessons, and vowing not to repeat them. To culminate this reflective journey, an annual self-surgery beckons, urging us to meticulously probe our lives, discerning areas for learning, unlearning, and relearning.

December 4th marks Psychologist, Albert Bandura’s 98th Birthday. I wanted to pay my respects to Bandura who kindly invited my wife, Dr. Marlee King and I to his home in Stanford in 2018 and answered every question we had! In honour of his work, I reference here his groundbreaking contributions to the field of psychology through his pioneering work in social learning theory. His seminal Bobo Doll Experiment demonstrated that individuals, particularly children, learn not only through direct reinforcement but also through observation and imitation of others. The children in the study learned aggressive behaviours by witnessing adults displaying aggression toward the Bobo doll. By emphasising and showcasing positive role models and individuals who exhibit kindness, empathy and cooperation in media, schools, and communities, we can provide healthier examples for children to follow. Understanding and applying the lessons from Bandura's experiment can guide efforts to cultivate a culture that values empathy, cooperation, and positive social influence.
