Creating good homes and places people are proud to live in is critical. We all want to be part of a community. The wide ranging debate at LREF on embedding social value explores all angles including whether Community What's App groups have a social value! What is Social Value? What part does planning play in creating that community? The planning system is central to creating social value, but it is not a one size fits all for every development to be embedded in policy. It is about the whole development industry working together to deliver developments, homes and new communities – recognising that all schemes are unique and understanding the value they bring to an area, embedding social value into design, and all phases of a development will deliver results. There are so many policies relating to design and quality developments, is there really a need for a specific social value policy? Realising social value requires collaboration and constant innovation, so I was grateful to have the opportunity to join an EG discussion at the London Real Estate Forum on delivering equitable places – hearing from fellow panellists Pooja Agrawal (Public Practice) Rokhsana Fiaz OBE (mayor, London Borough of Newham) Thomasin Renshaw (Pocket Living), Cath Shaw (Barnet Council) and Lucy Wood (Stantec).

These communities are often characterized by their tight-knit populations and reliance on localized resources, which have always played an integral role in the fabric of our society. Yet, the globalization of industries and the rapid urbanization of the world has left many of these communities grappling with economic challenges. As rural areas continue to adapt to global trends, strategies like #employeeownership will be crucial in ensuring these communities not only survive but thrive.

Last week, we unveiled the findings of the 2024 Board Diversity Index report, a collaborative effort between Watermark Search International and the Governance Institute of Australia. The event, hosted by Business Sydney and MinterEllison, heard from insightful speakers who shed light on the importance of diversity in boardrooms and its impact on organisational success. Special thanks to the MC, Paul Nicolaou, from Business Sydney and to Governance Institute Chair, Pauline Vamos, who facilitated the discussions. For the past five years, Governance Institute of Australia has collaborated with Watermark on this report, advocating for better governance practices across all sectors. We believe that data is just the beginning; there's still much to be done in fostering diversity and inclusion beyond gender. It's not just about ticking boxes; it's about driving strategic growth and innovation. Corporate Australia must rise to the challenge of reporting broader diversity measures, encompassing cultural, LGBTQI+, and disability inclusion. While it's a challenging journey, the rewards of diverse leadership are immense, paving the way for more effective decision-making and sustained competitiveness. With the collective efforts of the Changekeepers Circle, the team gathered for its first official meeting last September 15, 2023! It was an inaugural gathering of the team, and the leads were able to get to know each other better, set the stage for transformative action, and start to plant the seeds of change! 🌱🧡 The different leads of the Changekeepers Circle, alongside the founder of the Lab, discussed their vision for the organization and the different strategies they’ll take to make this vision a reality. The meeting was like an arena for brainstorming — where the collaborative efforts and advocacy initiatives of each member were acknowledged and taken into serious consideration — to ensure that we will carve the path to a future where the youth are active shapers of policies that matter. 🤝 The Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) are the only universally agreed blueprint to turn meaningful ambition into transformational change. ⚡ However, businesses report difficulties in integrating the SDGs into their core strategies and in understanding, reporting, and managing their impact on the Goals. 🚀 The UN Global Compact Network UK has just launched its SDG Showcase report, giving an overview of each of the SDGs, explaining why the Goals are material to businesses down to the SDG Target level, and showcasing good practice examples of how businesses in the UK are already contributing to achieving the Goals. 💡 I would like to thank my colleague and co-author Erin Sharpe, who has worked with me and our entire team to create this wonderful resource.
